Music History Part 2 Middle Ages, Renaissance and Morocco 00:00:00
Medieval music. The Christian religion was very important in the development of music because it 00:00:06
was a big part of the ceremonies. At the beginning the songs had a simple melody and it was called 00:00:11
playing chant. The songs were usually sung by a choir without instruments. From the end of the 00:00:16
19th century composers began to write more lines of melody which were sung at the same time. This 00:00:22
style is known as polyphony. The way we write down music today began to develop 00:00:27
in the Middle Ages. At first there were maps over the world to show singers what 00:00:35
to sing. This system was difficult to understand so the maps were placed on 00:00:40
one line, then two, three, four and finally five. The result was stuff. On the other 00:00:44
On the other hand, music was also very important for entertainment. In the Middle Ages, minstrels were very famous. 00:00:53
They were men and women who went from place to place singing, dancing, jogging and playing instruments. 00:00:59
Renaissance music. In Europe, during the 15th and 16th century, there was a great interest in art, music and learning. 00:01:07
This time became known as the Renaissance, which means rebirth. 00:01:15
Many composers began to work of the chords of November and Kings. They wrote music to entertain people. 00:01:19
Printing was invented in Germany around 1450 and was very important in the development of music. 00:01:28
Before this, music was copied by hand, which took a long time and was very expensive. 00:01:35
During this period, songs called madrigals became very popular. 00:01:42
Before the Renaissance, the instruments were used to accompany singers, but then composers 00:01:46
started to compose music, especially from instruments. 00:01:51
Instrumental music was often used with dancing. 00:01:55
Baroque is the name given to European music from about 1600 to 1750. 00:01:58
During this time, instrumental music became more and more important. 00:02:07
the most important composers in the period were Vivaldi, Bach and Handel. One of the most important 00:02:12
changes was the invention of opera. Oratorios were also important. They had religious stories. 00:02:18
Thank you. 00:02:27
