Basic English Grammar, Lesson 3
00:00:00
Topic, The Simple Past Tense
00:00:03
In Part 3, we'll review what we've learned so far, and then we'll practice forming questions.
00:00:08
Do you like to snack?
00:00:17
My favorite time of the day to snack is late at night.
00:00:19
Sometimes I eat more for a snack than I do for dinner.
00:00:23
Two nights ago, I made some brownies.
00:00:27
Brownies are a kind of chocolate cake.
00:00:32
Half is already gone.
00:00:36
I ate most of this by myself.
00:00:38
Last night, I also had a snack, but I didn't eat something sweet.
00:00:45
Let me show you what I did.
00:00:50
Did you pay attention to the verbs in the simple past tense?
00:00:53
Here they are again.
00:00:57
I made some brownies.
00:00:59
I ate most of this by myself.
00:01:01
Last night I also had a snack
00:01:03
I didn't eat something sweet
00:01:07
Let me show you what I did
00:01:10
Okay, now I will show you what I did
00:01:13
As you watch the video, let's practice forming the simple past tense
00:01:18
We'll practice with regular and irregular verbs
00:01:25
Example
00:01:29
You'll see a statement like this
00:01:31
And the verb will be in the base form
00:01:33
You put it in the simple past.
00:01:36
The answer here?
00:01:40
Jennifer cooked last night.
00:01:42
1. Jennifer got eggs and butter from the refrigerator.
00:02:06
2. She heated up the pan.
00:02:14
3. Jennifer sliced a piece of butter and put it in the pan.
00:02:46
4. She opened the egg carton.
00:02:55
5. Jennifer waited for the butter to melt.
00:03:01
6. Then she took out one egg and cracked it open.
00:03:28
7. Jennifer threw away the eggshell.
00:03:50
8. The egg began to fry.
00:03:56
9. Jennifer flipped the egg and fried the other side.
00:04:45
10. Finally, she placed the egg on a plate and ate it.
00:04:52
In previous lessons, we focused a lot on recognizing and understanding the simple past tense.
00:05:05
Now, we're really going to focus on using the simple past tense.
00:05:12
Let's begin with asking questions.
00:05:17
Forming questions. Do you know these question words?
00:05:21
We use who to ask about people, what for things, when for time, where for places, why for reasons, how for manners, which to identify one thing or a group of things, and whose to ask about possession.
00:05:25
Let's first look at WH questions, information questions.
00:05:49
These are questions that ask for specific information.
00:05:56
Our model question is, What did Jennifer eat?
00:05:59
The structure is question word, what,
00:06:03
helping verb, did, it signals the simple past tense,
00:06:07
subject, Jennifer,
00:06:12
and our main verb always takes the form of a base verb.
00:06:13
Again, our model question is, What did Jennifer eat?
00:06:19
The answer is, She ate an egg.
00:06:24
We used what as our question word because we were asking about the thing that she ate.
00:06:27
Let's try forming questions together.
00:06:34
Number one.
00:06:37
The answer is, Jennifer had a snack last night.
00:06:39
We're asking a question about time, so our question word is when.
00:06:43
Helping verb did, subject Jennifer
00:06:47
Base verb of had is have
00:06:51
So the question is, when did Jennifer have a snack?
00:06:55
2. The answer is Jennifer ate in the kitchen
00:07:00
We're asking about a place
00:07:04
Our question word is where
00:07:06
Helping verb did, subject Jennifer
00:07:08
Base verb, eat
00:07:12
Where did Jennifer eat?
00:07:15
Question 3
00:07:19
If the answer is Jennifer fried an egg because she was hungry,
00:07:20
what's the question word?
00:07:26
We're asking about a reason, so the question word is why.
00:07:28
Helping verb did, subject Jennifer, base verb fry.
00:07:33
Why did Jennifer fry an egg?
00:07:38
Exercise 1
00:07:42
Complete and then answer the questions.
00:07:43
I'll give you a moment so that you can practice forming the questions on your own.
00:07:47
Then, if you're studying by yourself, write the answers down.
00:07:51
If you're studying with a partner, take turns asking the questions.
00:07:55
1. When did you eat dinner yesterday?
00:08:00
2. What did you have for dinner?
00:08:07
3. What time did you go to sleep last night?
00:08:15
Now number four is a little different.
00:08:23
I'd like you to make this question without a question word.
00:08:25
Can you do it?
00:08:29
The question is,
00:08:31
Did you have a snack before bedtime?
00:08:32
This question is a little different because it's a yes-no question.
00:08:36
Questions that take a yes or no answer do not use a question word,
00:08:41
such as what, where, why, etc.
00:08:45
In the previous exercise, we saw this question.
00:08:49
Did you have a snack before bedtime?
00:08:53
Let's look at the structure.
00:08:56
It's did plus the subject plus the base verb.
00:08:59
Did you have a snack before bedtime?
00:09:04
We often give short answers to yes-no questions.
00:09:08
For example, did you have a snack last night?
00:09:12
Yes, I did. Or, no, I didn't.
00:09:15
Note the full forms.
00:09:19
Yes, I had a snack last night.
00:09:21
No, I didn't have a snack last night.
00:09:24
Exercise 2.
00:09:28
Find the mistakes.
00:09:30
Example.
00:09:31

00:09:33

00:09:34
The mistake?
00:09:36
