hello this is elizabeth and today we have a little bit of a different lesson so i know we've
00:00:00
been learning a lot of social sciences and with social sciences comes a lot of dates to remember
00:00:06
and i know that sometimes when you're reading the date in english the year is a really complicated
00:00:13
part to read so today we have a lesson on the many rules of reading years in english and i'm
00:00:19
gonna tell you the rules one by one so it'll be a little bit easier the next
00:00:27
time you see a date. Alright so these are the official Oxford rules of reading
00:00:33
years in English and there's two separate categories before 2000 and
00:00:39
after 2000. So before 2000, that is the 1600s, the 1700s, 1800s, 1900s, and anything before that.
00:00:47
So we're going to talk about those rules first. Okay, so if the year ends with two zeros,
00:01:00
we use the word hundred. This is not 1,900. No, this is 1,900. If it is from one to nine,
00:01:08
we would say 1902, or for example, 1905, 1706. If it's 10 or after, you will divide the number
00:01:21
into two parts. You will read this as 1821. You will read this as 1947. Okay, we have that handled.
00:01:36
Now we're going to talk about the rules for after 2000. So this is not 2100. This is simply
00:01:50
2000. If it's from one to nine, it'll be 2004 or 2009. It gets even more complicated when you get
00:02:00
to 10 and above because you can say it two ways. You can say 2014. You can say 2014, right? So you
00:02:12
can say 2021 or 2021. All right. I hope that helped just a little bit and I will see you in my next
00:02:25
video. Thank you.
