Comparatives of adjectives and adverbs. We use the following structures to compare two things 00:00:00
or actions. For adjectives and adverbs of one syllable, add a-er. For example, taller, smarter. 00:00:05
Sometimes, you might need to double the final consonant. For example, bigger, thinner. Use 00:00:13
than to compare. For example, she is taller than him. He runs faster than she does. For adjectives 00:00:18
of two syllables ending in Y, add ire, for example, healthier, happier. For adverbs, simply add more 00:00:28
before them, for example, more quickly. For adjectives and adverbs of two or more syllables, 00:00:35
simply add more, for example, more interesting, more nourishing, more happily, more beautifully. 00:00:46
Now let's have a look at the formation of the superlative form of adjectives and adverbs. 00:00:55
For adjectives and adverbs of one syllable, add the e-est. 00:01:00
For example, the biggest, the shortest, the fastest, the hardest. 00:01:04
And it's important for you to remember that we don't use than with superlatives. 00:01:09
For adjectives of two syllables ending in y, add the i-est. 00:01:17
For example, the funniest, the shortest. 00:01:21
Adverbs of two syllables ending in y add the most, plus adverb. 00:01:24
For example, the most quickly. 00:01:28
For adjectives and adverbs of two or more syllables, add the most plus adjective, adverb, for example, the most interesting, the most carefully. 00:01:29
Read the examples below. 00:01:45
Regarding irregular forms, you need to be very careful. 00:01:52
Study the table below, which shows the irregular comparative and superlative forms of the following adjectives and adverbs, good, well, bad, badly, far, and little. 00:01:55
Finally, let's review the structure as, as and its negative form, not as, as. 00:02:11
We use this structure to compare two things, actions, people, that are equal. 00:02:17
The adjective or the adverb does not change its form. 00:02:22
In the first example, ripe figs are as sweet as bananas. 00:02:25
We are saying that both figs and bananas are equally sweet. 00:02:29
Can you see how the comparisons are established in the other two examples? 00:02:32
