Over the last few months, Madagascar, an island located in the Indian Ocean, has been severely
00:00:05
hit by a series of devastating cyclones.
00:00:11
The resulting floods and storms have in total affected half a million of people on the island.
00:00:15
In the south, they are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance.
00:00:22
This terrible cyclonic season has resulted in an acute nutritional crisis, with 6,000
00:00:26
children and 920 women currently under treatment for malnutrition.
00:00:32
The eastern region has been severely struck by the unusual strong floods.
00:00:38
Certain districts have even stayed under water during over eight weeks.
00:00:43
After four cyclones since December, the most recent one, Indlala, has on March 15, violently
00:00:48
struck the northeast of the island.
00:00:54
Eighty deaths have been reported, and 105,000 additional homeless now require humanitarian
00:00:57
assistance.
00:01:04
It was incredible.
00:01:06
In only a few minutes, the heavy floods had washed out our house, which took us ten years
00:01:07
to build.
00:01:12
Seeing this, my children and I fled, taking only necessary belongings with us.
00:01:13
In a few minutes, everything collapsed, and with it, my dreams.
00:01:17
Onsui, a city located in the northern region of Sofia, is among one of the most severely
00:01:23
devastated cities by Indlala.
00:01:28
The main livelihood of the population is coffee, pepper and vanilla production.
00:01:30
The city of Onsui has been partially destroyed.
00:01:38
In the region, more than 1,500 homes, 105 classrooms are damaged, and several health
00:01:41
centers have been made havoc.
00:01:47
UNICEF has decided to establish an operational base at Onsui to provide humanitarian assistance.
00:01:50
Water filters, barrels, soap, tents, schooling kits, as well as high-energy biscuits provided
00:01:56
by the World Food Programme will now be sent on a regular basis according to the needs.
