Railway axis Lyon–Trieste–Ljubljana–Budapest This axis with a total length of more than 1 400 km includes about 750 km of new high-speed lines – including a base tunnel of about 52 km under the Alps used by both passengers and freight. The tunnel will link the congested Franco–Italian crossings bringing major reductions in travelling time for both passenger and freight services and making rail competitive with air and road travel. A pilot shuttle service for lorry transport (rolling road) is currently operating. In the long term, this could take some 15 000 trucks off the roads every week. Once the axis is completed, the capacity will be over 40 million tonnes of freight per year. It will play a significant role in reducing the number of trucks crossing the Alps. The new axis will also free capacity on existing, saturated railway lines, helping indirectly to improve freight, and local and urban passenger services.

If we want a competitive Europe which creates jobs, then people and goods have to be able 00:00:00
to move around easily and quickly, and without harming the environment. 00:00:16
That's the aim of the Trans-European Transport Network, a huge continental-scale programme 00:00:22
that will interconnect the national transport infrastructures to create a genuine trans-European 00:00:27
network. 00:00:32
A trans-European network is really the link that allows free movement of people and goods 00:00:33
in Europe. 00:00:45
We need this link. 00:00:46
