The EU sees the rail as a good alternative to ease the traffic on its overburdened roads. That’s why the EU wants to give a boost to major trans-European railway projects. Five key railway axes, as well as one key "technical" project ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) have been identified, where progress is not being made quickly enough due to difficulties of various kinds. To give impetus to these priority projects, the European Union has appointed important public figures to serve as European coordinators for the different axes. Their assignment is to bring the Member States involved together to come up with solutions to the problems and to speed up project execution. We release a series of 7 short video reports to highlight the status of the works on the 5 priority railway axes and some insights into the ERTMS. The videos also include interviews with Vice-President of the Commission Jacques Barrot and the six high profile coordinators appointed by the European Commission.
If we want a competitive Europe which creates jobs, then people and goods have to be able
00:00:00
to move around easily and quickly, and without harming the environment.
00:00:16
That's the aim of the Trans-European Transport Network, a huge continental-scale programme
00:00:22
that will interconnect the national transport infrastructures to create a genuine Trans-European Network.
00:00:27
Although initiated at the beginning of the 90s, the Trans-European Transport Network
00:00:57
has not yet attained its ambitious goals. It's run into financing problems and difficulties
00:01:15
with cross-border coordination.
00:01:20
Meanwhile, road traffic in Europe is constantly on the rise. However, solutions exist. Goods
00:01:25
transported by road today can be switched to other, less polluting means of transport,
00:01:31
such as rail, waterways or sea transport. This is referred to as modal transfer, or
00:01:36
moving from one mode of transport to another that is less used. This solution is strongly
00:01:42
encouraged by Europe.
00:01:47
The day you have a freight train that doesn't take more time to go from Madrid to Warsaw
00:01:48
than a truck, you can offer a real alternative. You can combine a long-distance rail that
00:01:55
consumes less energy and is more environmentally friendly, with the truck's always-useful
00:02:00
service, to ensure the deserts that the rail can't ensure.
00:02:05
In this context, rail offers important potential for easing traffic on major Trans-European
00:02:18
roads. That's why the European Union wants to reinvigorate Trans-European railway projects.
00:02:23
It's identified five fundamental railway axes where progress is not being made quickly enough
00:02:30
due to difficulties of various kinds.
00:02:34
The five railway axes are the following.
