NASA Why? Files segment involving students in an activity studying migration and explaining migration patterns.
Hi, my name is Jacqueline Dang and I'm in Ms. Stewart's class at Burbank Middle School in Houston, Texas.
00:00:00
Hi, I'm Kaylee and we're the Treehouse Detectives.
00:00:05
We think that the fish in the bay at home have migrated.
00:00:08
We definitely can tell you about migration, especially loggerhead turtle migration.
00:00:12
What is migration?
00:00:17
Migration is movement of animals.
00:00:19
Signals of Springs helps us to use NASA real-time satellite imagery and maps to understand the migratory patterns of turtles.
00:00:21
Why do turtles migrate?
00:00:29
They usually migrate when the temperature changes, mostly toward the warmer weather.
00:00:31
Why do they move toward warmer weather?
00:00:35
Their food also migrates, so they follow the food.
00:00:37
How many turtles are you tracking?
00:00:40
Just one. Our turtle, Marianne, has a sensor glued to her back that sends NASA real-time data showing her location.
00:00:42
The data is put on a website and we plot the coordinates each week on our map.
00:00:49
Where is she now?
00:00:53
Right now she's moving south at 35.4 north and 75.4 west, but when we started she was off the coast of Virginia.
00:00:55
Cool! That's right near where we live.
00:01:04
Do turtles always migrate in the same way?
00:01:07
No, but they follow similar patterns each year.
00:01:09
Can a change in the environment cause a difference in migration patterns?
00:01:12
I think so, but you might want to check with the Virginia Marine Science Museum.
00:01:16
They helped us a lot with our project.
00:01:20
That's a great idea. Thanks for all your help.
00:01:22
You're welcome. Good luck with your project.
