NASA Connect Segment explaining how birds navigate. Compares the aspects of GPS with natural migration of birds.
Wow, this is awesome. There's a computerized map on this receiver.
00:00:00
It says that we have to go northwesterly, so...
00:00:06
Oh, take a right, right here.
00:00:10
Right here.
00:00:12
Got it.
00:00:13
Oh, Van, are you sure you have those coordinates right?
00:00:16
We're coming into Busch Gardens Williamsburg.
00:00:19
Okay, listen, Van, I think you got us to the right place.
00:00:24
Read some more on the GPS instructions.
00:00:27
I'm going to take this and see what I can find out, okay?
00:00:29
And I'll be back in just a few moments.
00:00:31
Busch Gardens.
00:00:34
The bearings say here.
00:00:36
Feathered Follies.
00:00:40
Okay.
00:00:42
Hello, excuse me, am I in the right place?
00:00:49
Is this the first leg of the road rally?
00:00:52
Yeah, come on down.
00:00:54
Oh, great, fantastic.
00:00:55
Van, my man, you got us here.
00:00:57
You navigated us correctly.
00:00:59
All right.
00:01:01
Oh, I am so relieved.
00:01:03
Hi, I'm Shelly Canright.
00:01:04
I'm Denise.
00:01:06
Oh, I'm so glad to know I'm at the right place.
00:01:07
Here's my rally log.
00:01:08
Okay.
00:01:10
If you could sign that, please.
00:01:11
And I'm curious, where am I?
00:01:13
What is Feathered Follies?
00:01:16
This is the Feathered Follies bird show at Busch Gardens.
00:01:18
And what we do here is we have hawks, falcons, owls fly through the theater.
00:01:21
We have different types of parrots that do different behaviors to entertain the audience, the guests, while they're here.
00:01:25
So what in the world does Feathered Follies have to do with navigation or GPS?
00:01:30
I'm confused.
00:01:35
Well, all our birds that are here out in the wild, they do some type of natural migration.
00:01:36
Songbirds migrate at night.
00:01:40
They follow the stars, the birds of prey.
00:01:42
They migrate during the day so they can move with the way the sun changes.
00:01:44
They're following mainly their food and looking for warm weather.
00:01:48
What is the farthest that a bird has ever migrated?
00:01:51
Do you have any idea?
00:01:54
The Arctic Tern is the bird species that migrates the most, and they can go from northern Greenland down to Antarctica.
00:01:55
Wow, no kidding.
00:02:00
This is fascinating, but I know I need to be on my way.
00:02:02
So you've got some instructions there for me?
00:02:04
Yes, your next leg is going to take you to learn about early navigation.
00:02:06
Early navigation.
00:02:09
All right, gang.
00:02:10
You heard that.
00:02:11
Back to the car.
00:02:12
Let's get in and let's go.
00:02:13
Denise, thanks very much.
00:02:14
We're on our way.
00:02:15
Good luck.
00:02:16
All right, thanks.
00:02:17
Man, you were right.
00:02:19
You do know how to use one of these things.
00:02:20
What did you see?
00:02:22
Oh, this is so neat.
00:02:23
Birds.
00:02:24
I learned how birds can navigate by instinct.
00:02:25
Well, gee, that makes me wonder if the GPS could be used to study animals and nature.
00:02:28
Did you find our next clue?
00:02:33
I did.
00:02:35
All I know, though, is it has something to do with early navigation.
00:02:36
Well, let's go.
00:02:40
All right, let's get out of here.
