00:00:00
Amidst the uncertainty and violence that is life for so many in Iraq,
00:00:04
a team of vaccinators is embarking on an ambitious campaign to protect children from measles.
00:00:08
During the two-week operation, which is being supported by UNICEF and the World Health Organization,
00:00:14
as well as being financed by the European Commission,
00:00:19
some 8,000 vaccinators will be deployed around the country
00:00:22
in hopes of reaching the one million Iraqi children who are currently open to possible infection.
00:00:26
At centers such as these, parents crowd in, eager to have their children immunized against a disease
00:00:32
that could leave them severely ill, or worse, dead.
00:00:37
Just one shot is enough to protect most of these children for life.
00:00:43
In areas where security is most unstable, vaccinators move door to door,
00:00:48
explaining to parents the importance of immunizations and marking each house as they move on,
00:00:53
a sign to all that the children here have been protected against measles.
00:00:58
The importance of this on-the-ground work cannot be understated.
00:01:02
Many of these families do not have the ability to go to health centers
00:01:06
due to the violence and insecurity that is gripping their nation.
00:01:10
The Iraqi children are in need of this vaccine.
00:01:14
Even if something bad happens to us, we are sacrificing ourselves for this cause.
00:01:17
Parents, children, and vaccinators alike will all face challenges during this campaign.
00:01:24
But they know that with every vaccination, another child is protected from disease.
