Well, hello! Today we are going to learn the grammar from Unit 8 of English in the Red Questions. 00:00:00
So, first of all, we are going to analyze what kind of sentences we have. 00:00:11
We have affirmative sentences, negative and interrogative. 00:00:16
See that the pronoun is always in green, the verb is always in red, the complement is in blue, 00:00:20
and the auxiliary verb is in yellow. 00:00:27
yes, you like pizza, you don't like pizza and interrogative do you like pizza 00:00:30
okay that's that's all the kind of sentences 00:00:37
so what are the differences in position? 00:00:40
well in the negative we have the pronoun, the auxiliary verb, the verb and the complement 00:00:44
I don't like pizza 00:00:49
but in the interrogative the auxiliary verb and the pronoun swap positions 00:00:54
So, the auxiliary verb now comes into the first position and the pronoun comes into the second position 00:00:59
Do you like pizza? 00:01:05
This rule applies to all the tenses 00:01:09
I have written some examples for you to see 00:01:13
The present simple 00:01:16
You don't like pizza? 00:01:17
Do you like pizza? 00:01:19
Past 00:01:21
You didn't dance yesterday 00:01:22
Did you dance? 00:01:25
Future, will, remember, you will not or you won't go, will you go 00:01:27
Present perfect, you haven't read, have you read 00:01:34
So as you can see, we change the position of the auxiliary verb and of the pronoun 00:01:40
When we have a WH question, it's the same, the only thing I have to do is writing this WH at the beginning 00:01:46
So we have the auxiliary verb, the pronoun, the verb and the complement. Do you like pizza? 00:01:55
But now we have a WH at the beginning. What do you eat? Where does she live? 00:02:00
Who do you call? How will you do? And why has he gone to the park? Okay, so it's the same. 00:02:07
Now we are focusing on indirect questions. 00:02:16
We use indirect questions when we want to sound more polite. 00:02:19
They have an introductory sentence and a WH-question. 00:02:23
Bien, las preguntas indirectas funcionan para preguntar algo de manera un poco más educadamente. 00:02:27
Por si voy por la calle y quiero preguntar a alguien que me puede decir dónde está un sitio, 00:02:35
pues lógicamente le pregunto de una forma muy, muy educada, muy polite, ¿vale? 00:02:40
What kind of introductory sentences can we have? 00:02:46
Could you mind? Can you please tell me? Do you know? And then the WH question. What, who, where, how, which. 00:02:49
For example, do you know when we will back to school? That's all. This is an indirect question. 00:03:00
But there is a difference. And what's the difference? 00:03:09
way. The direct question, remember that before we have talked about changing the 00:03:12
position of the auxiliary verb and of the pronoun. You will go to the part. This 00:03:18
is an affirmative sentence, okay? But when we have an affirmative 00:03:24
sentence and I want to do a direct question, a normal question, I have to 00:03:29
change the order of the verb and of the pronoun. Will you go to the part? This is 00:03:33
normal question, a direct question. Will you? You will. But what happens when we 00:03:39
are writing or saying in direct questions that the order 00:03:46
does not change, stays the same. So if I have you will go to the park, 00:03:52
affirmative sentence, in this question, in direct questions, we don't change the 00:04:00
order of the pronoun and the order of the verb, auxiliary verb, they stay the 00:04:06
same. Do you know when you will go to the park? You will go, you will go. You will go, 00:04:11
will you go. Okay? So that's the difference. Here I have written something 00:04:19
maybe which is clear for you. In the direct question we have the auxiliary 00:04:27
verb in the first position and the pronoun in the second. Where can I find 00:04:33
the toilet? But in an indirect question we have the pronoun in the first 00:04:38
position and the auxiliary in the second. Could you tell me where I can find the 00:04:44
toilet? As you can see the sentence is the same. Where can I find the toilet? 00:04:51
Could you tell me where I can find the toilet? Hemos hecho la misma pregunta pero la 00:04:56
The first one, which is the direct question, where can I find the bathroom, where is the bathroom? 00:05:02
You can ask someone with whom you have confidence. 00:05:09
For example, I arrived at the new school and I ask the teacher, 00:05:13
Where can I find a toilet? 00:05:18
However, the indirect one, we use it to ask something in a more polite way. 00:05:19
If I go to a restaurant and I want to go to the service and I don't know where it is, 00:05:25
Pues lo pregunto de manera educada al camarero 00:05:30
Could you tell me where I can't find the toilet, ¿vale? 00:05:33
Como veis, el pronombre y el auxiliar no cambian de posición 00:05:36
Como ocurre con la direct question, ¿vale? 00:05:41
No cambian, se queda igual que está en afirmativa 00:05:44
Here I have another example for you 00:05:47
I have affirmative sentence, the same in both 00:05:50
I can't find the toilet, I can't find the toilet 00:05:54
but here in the in the red question the order does not change do you know where 00:05:58
I can find the toilet they don't change what happens with the 00:06:05
direct question yes they change I can can I yes okay and that's the end it's 00:06:11
not difficult but we are going to practice a lot okay so no worries if you 00:06:20
have any question any doubt you don't understand something please write to me an email okay goodbye 00:06:25
