UNICEF correspondent Steve Nettleton reports on the ongoing efforts to prevent another bird flu outbreak in Viet Nam.
You are watching UNICEF Television.
00:00:00
With kernels of corn, Nguyen Thi Tham fills out a questionnaire
00:00:04
in a government survey of poultry-raising practices.
00:00:09
Tham's entire farm of 200 chickens was culled in 2004
00:00:13
when an outbreak of avian flu struck Ha Thay province,
00:00:17
outside the capital, Hanoi.
00:00:21
She has struggled to start again with another 200 chickens,
00:00:24
but she worries about the future.
00:00:28
We believe the threat of avian flu is grave
00:00:31
and we are concerned about how we raise our poultry.
00:00:34
If our poultry is infected with avian flu,
00:00:37
it will be a huge economic loss for the family.
00:00:40
Vietnam was one of the countries hardest hit by the virus.
00:00:44
Ninety-three people were infected.
00:00:48
Of those, 42 died.
00:00:50
Millions of chickens were culled to contain the illness,
00:00:52
handing farmers tens of millions of U.S. dollars in losses.
00:00:55
A rapid response by the Vietnamese government,
00:01:00
with backing from the international community,
00:01:02
has helped bring the outbreak under control.
00:01:05
There have been no cases of human infection since November 2005,
00:01:08
but the risk of a return of the virus
00:01:13
and a potential human pandemic remains high.
00:01:15
We haven't seen the end yet, I believe.
00:01:19
I think it is very incumbent on us to not be complacent
00:01:21
and help the Vietnamese build their own capacity
00:01:24
to be able to respond in the most effective way possible.
00:01:26
A $16 million U.S. dollar joint program
00:01:31
between the government and the United Nations
00:01:34
coordinates an integrated response by government
00:01:36
and international agencies to control avian flu.
00:01:39
UNICEF is part of that effort.
00:01:43
It works with Vietnam's Ministry of Health
00:01:46
to raise community awareness and promote better hygiene,
00:01:49
with funds provided by the Japanese government.
00:01:52
With that support, the Vietnamese government
00:01:55
says it's better prepared for any potential outbreak.
00:01:58
Now we have experience to tackle with the outbreaks.
00:02:02
So from now and later on,
00:02:07
if any outbreaks on poultry and on humans,
00:02:10
we think that we have better knowledge and practice to control.
00:02:15
A welcome message for poultry farmers across the country,
00:02:20
as they will be among the first to suffer if avian flu returns.
00:02:24
