So when we want to express if we agree with someone about something or if we disagree with 00:00:01
them, we first have to figure out if what they are saying is a positive statement or if it's a 00:00:08
negative statement. So right now we're just talking about present simple. So the verb to do, 00:00:17
which is a very common verb in the positive is I do. If you want to negate this statement, 00:00:26
the negative is I don't. I do or I don't. Yes or no. I don't or I do not. This is just short for 00:00:41
this. So then this is a negative statement because it has don't and the word not. So 00:00:53
if we want to agree with I do, if we want to agree with a positive statement, we will say 00:01:06
so do I, or you can say I do too. They're both correct. If you want to 00:01:18
agree with this negative statement, so you want to agree with this, even though it's a negative 00:01:28
statement. It's the negative of this statement. I do, I don't. You want to agree with that, 00:01:43
I don't. So you would say, neither do I. Because the statement doesn't, and you don't either. 00:01:50
So, that goes from 2, 1, 2, to 0. 00:01:59
So, if you want to disagree with this positive statement, if you don't, but the statement is that you do, but you don't, 00:02:08
you would simply go over to the negative and say I don't or I do not and the same going the other 00:02:28
direction if the statement says I don't or I do not but you do you are disagreeing with this 00:02:41
statement and since you're disagreeing with a negative statement you need a positive statement 00:02:53
so just like here you go over here from I do if you don't you just say I don't from I don't if 00:02:58
you do you just go over here to I do so then another very common auxiliary verb to be so 00:03:07
the positive is I am and the negative is I'm not or I am not 00:03:20
this is just short for this again like up here I don't I do not I'm not I am not so this is a 00:03:30
positive statement and this is a negative statement because not is here so if you want to 00:03:41
agree with the positive statement, then you will say, so am I, or I am too. If you want to agree 00:03:51
with this negative statement, that you are not, you agree that you're not, then you say, neither 00:04:10
am I? So some examples of a positive statement. I love cats. This is implying the verb to do 00:04:22
because what are you doing I do love cats so I love cats positive statement so if you want to 00:04:53
agree with this positive statement you go over here to another positive and you say so do I 00:05:08
or I do too. If you want to disagree with this positive statement, you go over here to the 00:05:19
negative because this is a positive statement. So you go to the negative and you simply say, 00:05:32
I don't. This person does. He does what? He loves cats. I love cats. 00:05:37
okay but you don't okay so you can just say I don't and they'll know that you mean I don't 00:05:44
love cats if we start with the negative of this statement I love cats I don't like cats 00:05:53
so this is the negative of this positive statement if you want to 00:06:03
agree with this negative statement you go to the negative because this is negative so if you agree 00:06:12
with the negative then you have to say a negative statement to go along with it because if you go 00:06:25
from negative to positive, it's not agreeing. So if you don't like cats, this person doesn't 00:06:36
like cats and you don't either. You say, neither do I. This person doesn't like cats. You don't 00:06:47
like cats. Neither do I. That goes from two, one, two, take away this one because they don't 00:06:58
like cats. Take away this one because you don't like cats either. If you want to disagree 00:07:06
with this negative statement saying, I don't like cats, you need to use a positive statement. 00:07:14
So then you simply can say, I do. You go back from don't and you change it to do. I do. 00:07:25
If we're using the verb to be and we start with a positive statement, I am a girl. 00:07:33
So if you agree with this statement and you are a girl too, then you need to go to another positive statement because this is positive. 00:07:50
so i am a girl positive i am too if you want to disagree with this statement that is positive 00:08:03
you need to go to the negative where you can simply say i am not instead of i am i am not 00:08:19
If you agree with this positive statement, you go to the positive, you say, I am too. 00:08:30
Or, so am I. 00:08:42
These mean the same thing. 00:08:47
So then, again, with the verb to be, if we start with a negative statement, 00:08:52
the negative of this statement this is the positive I am a girl this is the negative of 00:09:00
this I am not a girl so we start with a negative statement if we want to agree with a negative 00:09:08
statement if you are not a girl this person's not a girl and you're not a girl either then you need 00:09:19
to match this negative with another negative statement so then you would say neither am I 00:09:28
if you want to disagree with this and you actually are a girl I am a girl you are a girl 00:09:34
then instead of saying am not you just say I am it's understood that what you mean 00:09:43
is that you are a girl i am a girl but you don't need to say i am a girl you can simply say i am 00:09:56
