After two centuries in the Iberian Peninsula, the Visigoths came to an end with the Muslim invasion.
00:00:00
The Muslims defeated the Visigoths in the Battle of Guadalete in 711 A.C.
00:00:07
They called this territory Al-Ándalus and they made Córdoba the capital city.
00:00:15
The Visigoths had a king, like Don Rodrigo or Leovigildo.
00:00:21
But Muslims don't. They have an emir that was controlled by the Caliphate of Damascus.
00:00:32
Later, in 756 A.C., Muslims have conquered white territories and they proclaim their independence.
00:00:49
They are not going to need a caliph anymore, so the first independent emir of Córdoba
00:01:00
was Abd al-Rahman I, who ordered the construction of the Mezquita de Córdoba.
00:01:09
In the 10th century, the Caliphate of Córdoba was established.
00:01:20
It was ruled by Caliph Abd al-Rahman III.
00:01:25
This was a time of great cultural growth, but the end of the Caliphate of Al-Andalus
00:01:29
is near and the territory was divided into small kingdoms called Taifas.
00:01:38
The Taifa kingdoms fight each other continuously, but otherwise the Christian kingdoms of the
00:01:50
north, take advantage of the divisions between the taifas to conquer the lands from the muslims.
00:01:57
Finally, in the 13th century, the Christians defeated the muslims in the Battle of Las
00:02:11
Navas de Tolosa. They conquered all of Al-Andalus, excepting the Kingdom of Granada.
00:02:16
Thank you.
