Women in Liberia talk about girls' education. UNICEF correspondent Sabine Dolan reports.
You're watching UNICEF Television.
00:00:00
Something like 60% of girls aged between, let's say, 15 and 25 have either never been
00:00:22
to school or have not completed their education.
00:00:28
These are the mothers of today's young children.
00:00:31
They're the mothers of Liberia's future.
00:00:34
It's quite challenging for girls.
00:00:37
The girls find it very difficult.
00:00:39
Some of them come to school, they have to pay their own school fees.
00:00:41
And for us, when they come, we try to give them the necessary encouragement.
00:00:46
In the case of girls, because they've been disadvantaged over time, with boys haven't
00:00:51
got the priorities, most times because of the lack of sufficient income, we must reverse
00:00:56
that because that's 50% of our population whose capacities are needed in the whole process
00:01:02
of nation building.
00:01:08
I personally believe that girls should be given more than the usual attention.
00:01:10
Now, if this attention is given to girls, we will be able to help them remain in school.
00:01:17
The more girls we get into school, the more prosperous Liberia will be.
00:01:24
This situation will not continue like this, you know.
00:01:30
Things will improve in the future.
00:01:32
I really love the school.
00:01:35
Because I want to learn something for tomorrow.
00:01:36
That's why I want to make a difference.
00:01:39
I want to become a doctor.
00:01:41
I want to go to an American school.
00:01:42
That's why we're putting emphasis on girls' education.
