The process of getting paper
The basic raw material for making paper is wood. To begin, pulpwood logs are
00:00:01
passed through a debarking drum in which they collide and rub together, removing
00:00:09
the bark. The bark is collected and burned as fuel in the power boilers. The
00:00:13
debarked logs are then conveyed to a chipper which reduces them to small
00:00:19
pieces. The chips are loaded into large vessels called digesters where they're
00:00:23
is steamed under pressure until the mixture is reduced to a wet, oatmeal-like pulp.
00:00:28
The cooking removes unwanted substances and frees the wood fibers
00:00:34
so they can be suspended in a ratio of 200 parts water to 1 part fiber.
00:00:37
This furnish, as it's called, is run onto a fast-moving mesh screen loop.
00:00:43
As the water is extracted, the fibers form a mat of paper.
00:00:49
The paper is pressed and passed through steam-heated drying cylinders
00:00:53
where the last of the water is removed.
00:00:57
A starch solution seals the paper surface
00:01:00
to prevent excessive ink absorption during printing.
00:01:03
Calendaring provides a smooth finish
00:01:07
by ironing the sheet between heavy, polished rollers.
00:01:09
The paper is wound onto a great spool to form a machine reel
00:01:13
and then rewound and cut into smaller rolls.
00:01:17
Some of these rolls are wrapped for shipment.
00:01:20
Others are sent for sheeting and packing.
