UNICEF Correspondent Steve Nettleton reports on efforts to spread youth awareness about HIV/AIDS in Malaysia
You are watching UNICEF Television.

HIV now has basically gotten rid of our defence, right?
00:00:03
It's not the usual pre-game pep talk.
00:00:10
This is when we have AIDS, right?
00:00:13
These young Malaysian football players are learning about a challenge
00:00:15
very different from winning today's game,
00:00:19
keeping themselves safe from HIV and AIDS.
00:00:22
This lesson has become a standard ritual of youth football leagues
00:00:26
in the capital, Kuala Lumpur.
00:00:30
It is a new approach to reach out to young people
00:00:32
who are increasingly at risk of catching and spreading HIV.
00:00:35
In Malaysia, more than 37% of the group who are currently infected
00:00:40
are between the ages of 13 and 29.
00:00:46
That's a serious population group that we need to look at
00:00:49
because it shows us that young people are not being well informed.
00:00:53
In partnership with the Football Association of Malaysia,
00:00:57
UNICEF and the Association for the International Exchange
00:01:00
of Students of Economics and Commerce, known as ISEC,
00:01:03
are working to make youth more aware of the dangers of HIV
00:01:07
and what they can do to avoid it.
00:01:11
Dipra Ray is an exchange student from New Zealand.
00:01:14
He believes it's critical for young people to hear this message
00:01:17
from other young people and in an active setting far from the classroom.
00:01:21
For us, I think that's the biggest motivation,
00:01:27
is that we're coming here, we're having fun,
00:01:29
but at the same time we try to make sure that they get the lesson
00:01:31
because if the young generation, if we, if I and my friends,
00:01:34
if we know how we can stop HIV, we can stop it.
00:01:38
It's not like it has to spread. It can be stopped.
00:01:42
For young footballer Sean Daniels, it's a lesson that is starting to sink in.
00:01:45
I learn about many things, how to protect myself, how to say no.
00:01:50
A winning game plan for young people to follow, long after the whistle is blown.
