Did you know that there was a remote-controlled car on Mars? 00:00:08
On July 4, 1997, Pathfinder landed on Mars 00:00:12
and sent out a small robot called Sojourner to explore. 00:00:16
How did NASA control Sojourner from Earth? 00:00:19
With radio waves. 00:00:22
But Mars is so far away. 00:00:23
Right. The radio waves took about 11 minutes to make a round trip. 00:00:25
But NASA scientists had a good solution. 00:00:29
They sent instructions to Mars once a day. 00:00:31
Then what? 00:00:34
Pathfinder recorded the instructions it received from Earth 00:00:35
and then sent them on to Sojourner. 00:00:38
What's going to happen in the future? 00:00:40
This time, NASA will talk to the rovers using two satellites 00:00:42
already in orbit around the Red Planet. 00:00:46
These two rovers will be bigger, go farther, and operate longer on Mars. 00:00:48
