On 1 May 2004 the EU became a Union of 25 Member States with a total population of about 455 million people. At the same time, the Union’s territorial expanse increased by about a quarter. However, few realise that the unprecedented enlargement of the EU also brings with it ecologic treasures unknown to many until now. New species of animals and plants have now entered into the EU fold.
From the Pyrenees to the Urals, this was the face of Europe nearly 10,000 years ago,
00:00:00
soon after the last Ice Age. A boundless virgin forest, where nature took its
00:00:08
course virtually free of all human intervention. Yet these pictures date
00:00:14
from today. They were filmed in Poland, more exactly in the heart of Bielowieża
00:00:18
National Park, one of the last remaining fragments of primeval forest in Europe.
00:00:23
Bielowieża forest is located at the eastern limit of the European Union. It
00:00:27
covers more than 140,000 hectares on both sides of the border between Poland
00:00:35
and Belarus. Paradoxically, preservation of the primeval forest of Bielowieża
00:00:40
originated with the love of the hunt of the first kings of Poland, who made the
00:00:47
forest their private hunting grounds.
00:00:52
While other forests in Europe were transformed into managed forests,
00:00:55
Bielowieża remained intact. Today it represents one of the world's richest
00:01:22
biodiversities. It's the only place in Europe where such a high concentration
00:01:27
of trees, several hundred years old, can be found.
00:01:31
Bielowieża forest has become a sanctuary for many species. It counts
00:01:52
more than 5,000 plant species and nearly 10,000 animal species, among them
00:02:16
European bison and wolf.
