NASA Sci Files segment describing how belaying tools and techniques provide a safe means of vertical ascent.
Hi. Are you Mr. Harding?
00:00:00
Yes, that's right. You must be one of the treehouse detectives.
00:00:04
Dr. D tells me you need to learn more about safety.
00:00:07
That's right. Dr. D mentioned that you rock climb.
00:00:10
We were wondering how you make it safe.
00:00:13
Well, I can show you that right here.
00:00:15
But first we need to outfit you with the climbing harness to tie the rope into you.
00:00:16
You aren't going to pull me up, are you?
00:00:21
No, you're going to have to do the climbing yourself.
00:00:23
The rope is just simply there to keep you safe.
00:00:25
How does that work?
00:00:28
It's called belaying.
00:00:29
I tie one end of the rope into your harness, and then it goes through the eye bolt at the top,
00:00:30
and then down to me, the belayer.
00:00:36
It passes through this belay device called an ATC or figure eight.
00:00:38
If you slip and begin to fall, I simply pull on the rope like this,
00:00:42
and the friction with the ATC stops the rope.
00:00:45
Are you sure this is going to work?
00:00:48
Let me show you.
00:00:50
Climb up a few feet and then let go.
00:00:52
Okay.
00:01:00
Wow, it stopped me right away.
00:01:05
I told you it would.
00:01:07
Another important safety feature is the type of rope we're using.
00:01:09
It's called a dynamic rope because it has stretch to it.
00:01:12
That way you don't stop too suddenly.
00:01:15
You want to try some rappelling?
00:01:20
What's that?
00:01:22
Let me have my son demonstrate.
00:01:23
It looks like he used the same device that you used to belay me.
00:01:30
That's right. I have a belay attached to him to keep him safe.
00:01:34
I'll bet we could use the belay principle as a safety device for a lift chair.
