In ancient history there was a very important civilization with a great influence in the
00:00:00
following years. They were the Greeks. Their civilization began 1,000 years before Christ.
00:00:09
The Greeks lived in Greece, in city-states called polis. The most important polis were Athens and
00:00:17
Sparta. Greek city-states had some common characteristics. Each of them had their
00:00:23
own governors. These governors were elected by free people. Free people were
00:00:29
only men older than 18 years old that were citizens, that means not slaves or
00:00:35
foreigners, and they could vote. This was the origin of democracy.
00:00:40
Police also had their own laws and their own army. The Greeks expanded their
00:00:46
territory through the Mediterranean Sea and created colonies in different places.
00:00:52
In the Iberian Peninsula, they created Rosas, Ampurias, Sagunto and Denia. Greek
00:00:56
colonies were fortified, they had walls for protection. They had two important
00:01:04
parts, the Acropolis, where the most important buildings were, like the temple,
00:01:09
and the Agora, which was a square where the market was and citizens walked and discussed.
