St. Patrick's Day. The history of St. Patrick. What is St. Patrick's Day? St. Patrick's Day 00:00:01
is celebrated on March 17th each year. It is the feast day of Ireland's patient St. Patrick. 00:00:11
St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in Ireland and all over the world by people of Irish heritage. 00:00:19
It has become a celebration of Irish culture. 00:00:25
Who was St. Patrick? 00:00:31
St. Patrick was actually born in Wales, which is just across the sea from Ireland. 00:00:32
It was the year 387, during the time Britain was occupied by the Roman Empire. 00:00:39
Patrick was Christian and came from a family of priests. 00:00:45
He died on March 17, 461, which is the day we all celebrate St. Patrick's Day in his honor. 00:00:49
One day, when Patrick was 16, he was kidnapped by pirates from Ireland. 00:00:59
They took Patrick to Ireland and sold him to his master as a slave, where he was forced to work in the fields. 00:01:04
One day, when Patrick was 20, he had a dream that he believed came from God. 00:01:13
He heard a voice that told him to escape. 00:01:19
Based on his dream, he escaped from his master and made it to the coast of Ireland. 00:01:22
There, he found a ship captain who agreed to take him back to Britain. 00:01:28
Once he was back home, Patrick decided he wanted to become a priest. 00:01:35
He studied for many years and was then made a bishop. 00:01:40
Patrick then decided to return to Ireland to tell people about what he believed. 00:01:45
he wanted to spread his Christian faith. Patrick spent 40 years in Ireland telling people about his 00:01:50
Christian faith. Some say that by converting the Irish to Christianity he drove all the snakes 00:02:02
away from Ireland into the sea. Ireland is a very rainy country and the fields are an emerald green. 00:02:10
One of the most common plants that grows along the grass is the shamrock. 00:02:20
It's a small three-leaf clover. 00:02:25
The shamrock is one of the most important symbols of St. Patrick's Day. 00:02:29
Patrick used the shamrock to help teach people about God. 00:02:34
He believed it represented the Holy Trinity. 00:02:38
St. Patrick's Day 00:02:47
Today, St. Patrick's Day, is as much a celebration of Irish culture as a celebration of Patrick himself. 00:02:49
People all over the world wear shamrocks and green clothes on March 17th to avoid getting pinched. 00:02:56
Thank you for watching! 00:03:18
