Students in the Palestinian territories are beginning a new semester, 00:00:04
after violence and strikes last year kept many away from their studies. 00:00:08
In the West Bank, a strike called by unpaid teachers in the fall 00:00:12
cancelled classes for more than 750,000 children, 00:00:16
including these students at a girls' school in Marta, 00:00:20
a village north of Jerusalem. 00:00:23
I am happy because I came back to school, 00:00:26
because I learned so many important things in it. 00:00:31
Last year, more than 120 Palestinian children under 18 00:00:35
were killed in the armed conflict. 00:00:39
Mariam Al-Araj, the principal of the girls' school, 00:00:41
says she has seen its effects on her students. 00:00:44
When students came back to school, we faced enormous challenges, 00:00:48
one of the most important being the amount of work for everyone, 00:00:51
students, teachers and principals. 00:00:54
Also, we noticed a change in their behavior. 00:00:57
There appears to be more violence in it. 00:01:00
Two-thirds of the population in Gaza and the West Bank 00:01:03
live below the poverty line, 00:01:06
and many families struggle to send their children to school. 00:01:08
With the help of the Saudi Committee for the Relief of Palestinian People, 00:01:11
as well as other donors, 00:01:15
UNICEF has provided school supplies and teacher training 00:01:17
to schools across the region. 00:01:20
Given the environment in which the children live, 00:01:22
both in West Bank and Gaza, 00:01:25
we have to do one thing, and that is to protect education for children. 00:01:27
It is of utmost importance that we guarantee 00:01:31
that children have a right to quality education. 00:01:34
This school in Gaza City, Al-Tufa School, 00:01:37
enrolls 870 female students, most of them poor. 00:01:40
Their salaries paid, teachers are now back in the classroom, 00:01:44
where these children need them to be. 00:01:48
