What can be done in order to promote peace in the world?
The right to peace and security is a basic human right, included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights proclaimed by the United Nations in 1948.
00:00:00
Unfortunately, this doesn't mean that the right to peace is everywhere respected.
00:00:10
This right is challenged in our modern world by threats such as terrorism, people trafficking, illegal arms trade, epidemics and global illnesses, climate change or wars.
00:00:16
Are you aware that there are many ongoing armed conflicts in our world today?
00:00:28
I invite you to go to the internet and locate them.
00:00:34
Check where wars are being fought and how many people die every year in them.
00:00:39
And you will be shocked to know that ongoing conflicts are a real problem in our world nowadays.
00:00:44
Now, what can we do to stop this?
00:00:52
What can we do to promote the right to peace?
00:00:54
Spain, as a member of the European Union, of the United Nations
00:00:57
and also of the NATO, that's the North Atlantic Treaty Organization
00:01:02
tries to promote peace in different ways
00:01:05
Actually, the right to peace is included in our constitution
00:01:08
because the Spanish constitution states that Spain aims to be
00:01:12
a just, free and secure society that promotes peace
00:01:17
by cooperation in an international way.
00:01:23
So, we try to promote peace wherever we can,
00:01:28
not only within our borders, but also abroad.
00:01:31
How can we do this?
00:01:35
For example, in the European Union, Spain contributes to Europol,
00:01:37
which is a special police force that tries to combat crime at a European level.
00:01:41
Some crimes, serious crimes, are international in scope.
00:01:47
they are not limited to national borders so we need an international police body to combat them
00:01:51
think about drug trafficking illegal people trafficking or terrorism spain also participates
00:02:00
in peace missions that are promoted by nato and by the united nations these peace missions try
00:02:08
to enforce peace treaties try to separate armies that are fighting in the war and mainly try to
00:02:15
reconstruct countries that have been suffering a war or tries to give humanitarian assistance
00:02:24
when needed i also invite you to go to the internet and check where our armed forces are
00:02:31
currently working in international peace missions and you will see how we try to help
00:02:38
other countries in order to promote peace worldwide.
