The first preparatory meeting of the 2008 International Year of Sanitation was held
00:00:07
at UNICEF headquarters in New York.
00:00:12
Led by His Royal Highness Willem-Alexander the Prince of Orange, panelists sought to
00:00:15
find new ways to focus attention on the global sanitation crisis and address the importance
00:00:20
of meeting Millennium Development Goal 7, the reduction of the number of people without
00:00:26
access to adequate sanitation facilities to 25% by 2015.
00:00:31
We shouldn't forget that in 2000 when the NDGs were formulated first, people were looking
00:00:37
at them as what is this?
00:00:42
And now we're only looking at how we can adjust our activities to actually achieve those NDGs.
00:00:43
So a lot has already happened in the past seven years and people actually start believing
00:00:49
that achieving NDGs is a possibility.
00:00:53
2.6 billion people, some 41% of the global population, have no access to proper sanitation
00:00:56
facilities.
00:01:04
Of them, 980 million are children.
00:01:05
The lack of access to proper sanitation and clean sources of water has been linked to
00:01:10
a wide range of diseases such as diarrhea, which often leads to or accelerates malnutrition,
00:01:14
and pneumonia.
00:01:21
During the meeting, a list of objectives for the International Year of Sanitation was drafted
00:01:23
and presented to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
00:01:27
These objectives will be finalized and then presented to governments and partners around
00:01:32
the world as a basis for which to measure the success of the 2008 International Year
00:01:36
of Sanitation.
00:01:42
Let us make this a remarkable year of global sanitation achievement, one that generates
00:01:43
real positive changes for the millions and even billions of people who do not yet enjoy
00:01:51
this basic ingredient of human welfare.
00:01:58
I thank you for your participation and contribution and I look forward to your continued collaboration.
00:02:02
Thank you very much.
00:02:09
Access to better hygiene opens the possibilities to a better way of life for children everywhere.
00:02:11
It means improved economic growth, sustained progress in education, and a solid foundation
00:02:17
for public health.
