When we look back at history, we divide it up into different periods. 00:00:26
Usually, an important event marks the end of one period and the beginning of another. 00:00:34
Historians have different ideas about when the periods of history end and begin. 00:00:40

Prehistory, Ancient History, Middle Ages, the Early Modern Ages and the Modern Age. 00:00:52

Prehistory began with the first appearance of the first humans more than 2 million years ago. 00:01:02
Ancient History 00:01:18
Ancient History began with the invention of writing around 3200 before Christ in Mesopotamia. 00:01:20
On the Iberian Peninsula, this period started with the arrival of colonizers from the Mediterranean in the 12th century before Christ. 00:01:31
The Middle Ages 00:01:41
The Middle Ages began with the fall of the Western Roman Empire in after death 476. 00:01:42
It was a period of progress but also of war and disease. 00:01:53
The Early Modern Age 00:01:59
The Early Modern Age begins in Europe with the fall of Constantinople in 1453. 00:02:01
This was when the Ottoman Empire took control of the city of Constantinople, 00:02:10
which was the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. 00:02:15
In Spain, the early modern age began with Colón's arrival in America in 1492. 00:02:19
The modern age in Europe began with the French Revolution in 1789. 00:02:27
This was when the people of France overthrew the monarchy and took control of the government. 00:02:38
In Spain, the modern age began with the Spanish War of Independence in 1808. 00:02:42
