Small and medium-sized enterprises play a crucial role in European competitiveness and job creation 00:00:28
due to the potential to develop new products and services across all business activities. 00:00:34
The overwhelming majority of firms in the European Union are SMEs. 00:00:39
They currently generate 63% of gross domestic product. 00:00:43
In the same manner as large firms, a growing number of SMEs are faced with increasing competition 00:00:47
within the internal market and globally. 00:00:52
Currently many SMEs need to outsource their research activities in order to innovate, grow and solve technological problems. 00:00:55
The European Union supports transnational SME research activity under two SME-specific funding schemes. 00:01:04
Cooperative research projects, which support small groups of SMEs to solve a common technological problem 00:01:12
and collective research projects, which targets large groups of SMEs in specific sectors via their trade associations. 00:01:18
We now present four examples of SME research projects from the 5th and 6th Framework Programmes, 00:01:26
where SMEs have successfully cooperated with universities or research organisations 00:01:33
to expand their business operations and their knowledge base in fields of endeavour such as 00:01:38
the environment, medicine, agriculture, food and engineering. 00:01:43
