This video explores the links between science, technology, economy and ethics.
Science and technology are part of our everyday life.
00:00:00
Our world would be inconceivable without electricity, antibiotics or the Internet, for example.
00:00:04
But science and technology are also closely linked with economics,
00:00:10
as most of the products that we use every day are created by companies that sell them in a market economy.
00:00:14
A market economy is a system in which free agents, such as individuals or companies,
00:00:22
Companies can buy and sell their products freely.
00:00:28
Supply and demand determines the price, and this implies that competition is essential
00:00:32
in this system.
00:00:37
Many companies want to create new products, so they invest large quantities of money and
00:00:38
talent in innovation, research and development, in order to gain new customers and increase
00:00:45
their benefit.
00:00:53
Of course, companies must have benefits in order to survive, but we must remember that
00:00:56
this cannot be the only purpose of a company.
00:01:03
Companies also have a social and environmental responsibility.
00:01:08
They should make their products in an environment that is safe, they must grant a good working
00:01:12
conditions for their labor and they must also respect the environment unfortunately many
00:01:19
companies don't do so for example when they relocate their production they offshore their
00:01:27
industries in order to make their products in countries that have a very permissive legislation
00:01:32
in respect with pollution and very cheap labor for example now this is clearly unethical
00:01:40
And in order to prevent these things from happening, we have invented what we call deontological codes.
00:01:47
A deontological code is a set of norms that establishes our duties.
00:01:55
And deontological codes are especially important in many professions, such as medicine, finance, journalism, politics, etc.
00:01:59
Now, unfortunately, making a list of our duties and obligations in a deontological code
00:02:10
does not solve all the possible problems that may arise when we are at work.
00:02:17
That's why sometimes ethics committees are necessary.
00:02:23
For example, in hospitals, many times professionals face ethical dilemmas,
00:02:26
situations when they have to decide between two different options,
00:02:33
and both have serious advantages and disadvantages, so it's not easy to decide what to do.
00:02:37
In such situations, it is essential to have the aid of an ethics committee,
00:02:43
a group of experts that analyses the moral issues involved and helps us to take the correct decision.
00:02:50
Companies should also be environmentally and socially responsible.
00:02:59
they should know that their only purpose is not to make money of course making
00:03:04
money is legitimate for a company they need money to survive but they also have
00:03:10
a social and an environmental responsibility that must be taken into
00:03:14
account and we individuals also have a responsibility as consumer we should
00:03:19
always take into account how the products we buy have been produced have
00:03:25
Have they been environmentally friendly?
00:03:30
Have they taken into account the rights of their workers?
00:03:33
Have they given labour a good and fair salary?
00:03:37
Have the products been created according to all the legislation?
00:03:41
Are they respectful with human rights?
00:03:46
Whenever you buy something, please remember the importance of making a good choice and
00:03:50
responsibility you have as an individual and as a consumer as well.
