Well, it certainly wasn't something I thought about growing up or in college in Ann Arbor, Michigan. 00:00:00
None of this came to the forefront until I had a child with a disability. 00:00:05
Part of what we needed to do was come up with a vision for what was his life going to be like. 00:00:14
And my wife and I thought long and hard about that. 00:00:19
And the thing that kept coming to the forefront is that he would feel like he belonged. 00:00:21
Think of who you are as a person now. 00:00:26
You have a job, but you also have hobbies and interests and passions. 00:00:29
And a lot of that was formed growing up, not just through the academic experience of school, 00:00:32
but through the social and emotional experience of school. 00:00:36
Being with lots of different kinds of kids and people and learning to be challenged in your presumptions 00:00:38
and learning that diversity is a broad spectrum of people. 00:00:43
Unless you live that diversity day in and day out, I don't think you ever grasp that. 00:00:47
And I don't think you ever develop socially and emotionally the way that you need to. 00:00:51
To belong when you're a child that uses a wheelchair, that has a significant speech disorder and other challenges, 00:01:00
you need to be in a community that believes that all people belong in your schools, 00:01:06
in your extracurricular activities, that all kids can learn, that all kids can go on to college. 00:01:10
And when you think about that level of accessibility, you're talking about every part of our society. 00:01:15
So thankfully, we're in a community that believes that kids with disabilities belong in general education 00:01:21
because 30 years of research shows that inclusive education for kids with disabilities yields better outcomes 00:01:26
academically, socially, in terms of their jobs, in terms of their access to college. 00:01:32
Access, accessibility, inclusivity has to be a lens that you start from the very beginning 00:01:44
when you're thinking about what software to purchase, how do you write code, who do you work with on your team, 00:01:49
can we bring in a more diverse team of people to think about this, can we beta test our projects 00:01:53
with people who have different challenges and different abilities. 00:01:58
Once you have that lens of inclusivity and accessibility, you start looking at all different aspects of our society 00:02:01
and saying, hmm, is this really designed in the best possible way? 00:02:06
Is it the most universally designed technology? 00:02:09
So I think that IT folks, you know, first they have to have that motivation. 00:02:11
They have to believe that college is a place for all learners. 00:02:15
They have to believe that college is a place for all learners. 00:02:18
And there are increasingly students of all different kinds of abilities and disabilities going to college. 00:02:21
There are actually, oh, up to 270 programs around the country at universities 00:02:26
that are specifically geared towards bringing more students with disabilities into the college environment. 00:02:30
So once you have that lens and that motivation, then you think, 00:02:35
how am I going to universally design the technology from the beginning? 00:02:38
And especially when you have the opportunity to take on new projects and build new infrastructure, 00:02:42
if that's your lens from the beginning, you're going to save so much work 00:02:46
in terms of trying to retrofit it down the line to meet new ADA requirements 00:02:49
or new accessibility requirements. 00:02:53
