Hello, it is Elizabeth here, and today I want to talk to you about Social Sciences 5, Unit 6, Lesson 2. 00:00:01
So now we are on to talking about who were the Catholic Monarchs. 00:00:09
So who were they? We will find out today. 00:00:17
Alrighty, so how did Fernando and Isabel become Monarchs? 00:00:21
And you're probably wondering, who are these people? 00:00:27
These are these people. 00:00:31
This is Isabel and this is Fernando 00:00:32
and they are the Catholic Monarchs. 00:00:34
But how'd they get there? 00:00:37
Hmm, okay. 00:00:38
So it all started with Enrique, the King of Castilla. 00:00:40
And he named Isabel as his heir to the throne. 00:00:46
So when he died, and let's look at our timeline. 00:00:53
When did he die? 00:00:55
In 1478, Isabel declared that she was queen. 00:00:57
But there were some problems because Juana, Enrique's daughter, she thought that she should be queen. 00:01:02
So their supporters had a war. 00:01:11
And in 1479, Isabel won the war. 00:01:15
and in that same year her husband Fernando became the king of Aragon. Alrighty so now 00:01:20
what did the Catholic monarchs do? What did they even do? Okay so first they united Castilla and 00:01:30
Aragon to form one big kingdom. This increased their power. Then they created a modern state 00:01:40
with many officials then they conquered granada from the muslims in 1492. this was the end of the 00:01:48
reconquista they expanded their kingdom to include the canary islands melilla and navarra all right 00:01:56
they also gave money to christopher columbus for his voyage to discovery 00:02:09
so now we will talk about what was the spanish inquisition fernando and isabel were very 00:02:15
intolerant towards the other religions and wanted religious unity so they established the inquisition 00:02:24
in 1478 this means that they had special powers to find people who did not follow the catholic 00:02:32
religion this resulted in people being arrested tortured killed interrogated and in 1492 the 00:02:41
jewish people were even expelled from the kingdom all right let's review enrica juana fernando and 00:02:54
isabel and these two are our catholic monarchs all right thank you see you next time 00:03:04
Thank you. 00:03:11
