See, all matter is composed of atoms. 00:00:16
Atoms usually have an equal number of positive and negative charges, protons and electrons. 00:00:19
Atoms can gain or lose electrons when two different materials, like you and the doorknob, contact each other. 00:00:24
As you walk across the carpet, you develop a negative charge as electrons move from the carpet to you. 00:00:30
This charge is known as static electricity. 00:00:35
When you went to open the door, the electrons jumped from you to the doorknob. 00:00:38
That caused an electrical spark. Shocking, isn't it? 00:00:43
Is there some way I can avoid getting shocked? 00:00:46
