We are going to study the third conditional in English.
00:00:01
So, first of all, when do we use the third conditional?
00:00:14
We use it when we want to talk about situations that are impossible to happen.
00:00:19
Because we are referring to the past, hypotheses in the past.
00:00:25
And how do we form the third conditional?
00:00:30
the sentence that goes with if
00:00:31
use the past perfect had plus past participle
00:00:36
if I had studied
00:00:43
in the other sentence
00:00:46
we use would plus have plus past participle
00:00:50
I would have passed the exam
00:00:58
so if I had studied
00:01:02
I would have passed the exam
00:01:05
is one option with comma
00:01:07
I would have passed the exam if I had studied the other option without a comma.
00:01:08
So let's now compare the three conditionals that we have already studied.
00:01:15
First conditional, remember that it's formed with present in the if sentence and will in the other sentence.
00:01:22
If I have money, I will buy a modern cell phone.
00:01:31
If I don't have money, negative, I won't buy a modern cell phone.
00:01:36
If my mother travels to Spain, she will have a good job.
00:01:42
Question, what would you do if you fail the next exam?
00:01:46
If I fail the next exam, I'll feel sad.
00:01:49
Let's go with the second conditional.
00:01:53
Remember that it's formed with past and but plus verb.
00:01:58
Here you have the examples.
00:02:04
If I won the lottery, I would buy a really nice fast car.
00:02:05
If I had two heads, I would wear two hats.
00:02:11
If I saw an alien, I would run away really quickly
00:02:14
If I lived in China, I would eat my food with chopsticks
00:02:18
If I put salt in my coffee, I would not taste very good
00:02:22
If I ate 20 hamburgers, my stomach would explode
00:02:27
If I went to the moon, I wouldn't breathe easily
00:02:34
If I didn't practice so much, I wouldn't play the piano very well
00:02:37
And now let's go with examples of the third conditional.
00:02:42
Remember that the if sentence goes with past perfect
00:02:47
and the other one with would plus have plus past participle.
00:02:52
If I had got a gold medal, I would have been happy.
00:02:57
If the weather had been good, we would have gone water skiing.
00:03:00
If you hadn't lied, you wouldn't have ended up in prison.
00:03:04
Now you can practice.
00:03:08
you
