You are watching UNICEF Television. 00:00:00
Only three to five years old, 00:00:04
these children are already learning a second language. 00:00:06
They are ethnic Hmong, 00:00:11
and at their age know little of their national language, Vietnamese. 00:00:13
Today, they are reciting a Vietnamese poem. 00:00:19
There are no classrooms in the village of Ban Moi 00:00:24
in the mountains of northern Vietnam, 00:00:27
so young children gather in the village meeting hall. 00:00:29
Moi Thi Sai lives just a few minutes away. 00:00:34
Coming here is much simpler than making the 30-minute hike 00:00:37
down to the main preschool along an often muddy path. 00:00:40
UNICEF supports preschools like this 00:00:46
to give children in rural areas a head start in their education. 00:00:48
In addition to providing toys and other materials, 00:00:52
UNICEF helps develop training materials for teachers 00:00:55
to work with ethnic minority children in their own language. 00:00:58
Bilingual teaching is very useful. 00:01:03
When the children are very young, they only speak their native language. 00:01:05
If we speak to them in Vietnamese, 00:01:08
they don't understand and are not interested. 00:01:10
Now, with bilingual education, 00:01:13
we explain the meaning of the poems, 00:01:15
we teach them to sing a song in their language, 00:01:17
and they understand it better and feel more interested to go to school. 00:01:19
UNICEF also works to get the broader community involved 00:01:23
in child care and development. 00:01:26
Once a month, parents, grandparents, health workers and village leaders 00:01:28
meet in Ban Moi to share experiences 00:01:32
and learn more about children's issues, 00:01:35
from providing proper nutrition 00:01:37
to improving social and emotional growth. 00:01:39
It is part of a UNICEF goal to ensure that by 2010, 00:01:46
all children under six are physically and mentally prepared for primary school. 00:01:49
An effort to break down environmental and linguistic barriers 00:01:55
to give young Vietnamese an equal footing in their education. 00:01:59
In Soi Giang Commune, Vietnam, 00:02:04
this is Steve Nettleton reporting for UNICEF Television. 00:02:06
