You may already know that there are many important parts inside a computer, 00:00:00
but what exactly do they do? 00:00:04
Let's take a look inside and learn about the various components that make a computer work. 00:00:06
Whether it's a desktop computer or a laptop, 00:00:12
every computer has a large circuit board called a motherboard. 00:00:16
This contains some of the most important parts of the computer, 00:00:20
such as the CPU, also known as the central processing unit or processor. 00:00:24
The CPU can be considered the brain of the computer, 00:00:29
because it processes information and carries out commands. 00:00:32
Since it tends to get hot, it's covered by a piece of metal called a heatsink, 00:00:36
which draws heat away from the processor. 00:00:41
The motherboard also contains the computer's RAM, or Random Access Memory. 00:00:44
This is the short-term memory that the computer uses whenever it's performing calculations. 00:00:50
However, you cannot store your files there, 00:00:55
because the RAM is cleared when you shut off the computer. 00:00:58
The hard drive provides long-term storage, 00:01:02
keeping all of the computer's data even when it's turned off. 00:01:05
Many hard drives use a magnetic platter to store data, 00:01:09
but many newer computers have solid-state drives, 00:01:13
which are faster and more durable, but also more expensive. 00:01:16
On many desktop computers, the motherboard has expansion slots 00:01:21
that allow you to upgrade by adding expansion cards. 00:01:25
You can add a video card to get better graphics performance, 00:01:29
or you can add a wireless card to connect to your wireless home network. 00:01:32
Most laptops, however, don't have expansion slots. 00:01:37
Of course, the computer's components need electricity to run. 00:01:41
The power supply unit is designed to take power from the wall outlet 00:01:45
and send it to all of the different components that need power. 00:01:48
laptops also contain a built-in battery that lets you use them anywhere a computer is a 00:01:51
pretty complex machine but now that you've seen what goes on inside it should be a little less 00:01:58
