Hello everyone! So today I am going to share a little bit about my favorite story and my favorite 00:00:00
book. So I would just like to share that these are two really challenging subjects for me to pick a 00:00:07
favorite in. I studied English literature, books and stories are things that have always made me 00:00:16
really, really happy. And I have always made sure that I'm surrounded by books and hearing as many 00:00:23
stories as possible. So it was it was kind of hard for me to pick a favorite in either of these 00:00:31
categories. But I picked one story and one book that I really, really enjoyed growing up and when 00:00:37
I was about your ages. So I wanted to share those with you. Okay, so the first one is a really short 00:00:43
little story um and when I first heard it it was in Amharic um in the Ethiopian language one of the 00:00:50
ones that my parents speak and it was told to me as a way of kind of communicating that different 00:00:57
perspectives matter that you may think that someone another classmate in your class is silly 00:01:05
or another student or just someone that you know and someone that you work with but your experience 00:01:11
may be different than their experience and that is why they have the perspective that they do 00:01:17
so maybe if you hear them out you might be able to learn a little bit about their perspective as 00:01:24
well so I of course all of that wasn't explained to me when this story was told to me it was just 00:01:29
kind of a funny story but after after years of kind of like thinking back on it that's sort of 00:01:36
what I've gathered um and I've written it down just to make sure that I don't mess it up so 00:01:42
the story is kind of loosely translated as the lazy student and the story goes that there was 00:01:46
once a lazy student who could not understand simple math one day the teacher was discussing 00:01:54
subtraction in class and the student could not understand so the teacher tried to give him an 00:01:59
example he said if you have five sheep in a group and one goes out of that group through a hole 00:02:05
how many are you left with and the student said but teacher i'll be left with none and the teacher 00:02:12
totally loses his temper gets super frustrated and says how in the world could you make a mistake 00:02:18
like that you have five one leaves it's simple and the student replies crying teacher teacher i know 00:02:24
the character of sheep i work with them if one goes all of the rest will follow and the teacher 00:02:30
laughs and the rest of the class laughs too because all of a sudden it makes sense. So yeah 00:02:36
that story always kind of made me laugh and also helped me take a step back sometimes in situations 00:02:42
where I think that something is obvious or an answer is obvious and realize that someone's 00:02:49
perspective might just be a little bit different than mine. Okay so shifting over to favorite book 00:02:54
this one was really hard like I said I definitely could have could be talking to you about Harry 00:03:00
Potter right now. That's a book that I've read and reread. I also read the Twilight series a lot 00:03:06
growing up. A lot of the books that you guys probably have read as well but I decided to 00:03:11
talk about one that maybe less people have heard of or less people have read. It is called Gregor 00:03:17
the Overlander and it is by Suzanne Collins who is the same person who wrote the Hunger Games 00:03:25
series and gregor the overlander is kind of like an epic fantasy novel and it was the first book 00:03:32
that was written in the underland chronicles which is just like the series that this book is a part 00:03:39
of so it's a really weird book um there's a lot there's kind of a lot going on in it but basically 00:03:44
the moral of the story is that there's this kid and his name is gregor and he lives with his family 00:03:52
in a small apartment um in New York City and his baby sister who he's supposed to be watching 00:03:59
really closely one day falls through this kind of like air duct in the ground um in the building's 00:04:05
basement and he dives in after her of course because he's worried about his sister um and 00:04:11
then they fall into this totally new world called the Underland and the humans that live there kind 00:04:16
of have like this really like translucent skin sort of like fairy like and there's like bats 00:04:24
and rodents and insects and all of the things that you would expect to live underground but 00:04:30
they're like gigantic um and there's princes there's princesses there's kings um there's 00:04:34
prophecies there's a lot of interesting things going on in this world so it's it's a really 00:04:43
cool book I would definitely recommend it it was one of my favorites growing up and I read the 00:04:48
whole series um and I think that each book is really good and kind of stands alone really well 00:04:52
um yeah so favorite story favorite book check hope everyone's doing well bye 00:04:58
