You are watching UNICEF Television. 00:00:00
Students take an exercise break at An Thien Quan Primary School 00:00:05
in the northern mountainous region of Vietnam. 00:00:09
Drumbeats keep the stretching in step and on time, 00:00:13
ensuring it fits its appointed slot 00:00:16
in a highly ritualized school schedule. 00:00:19
This is another ritual students are asked to perform, 00:00:23
a habit the teachers hope they will take home with them. 00:00:26
Clean water and proper sanitation are rare luxuries 00:00:30
in remote, rural regions of Vietnam, 00:00:33
and knowledge of basic hygiene is poor. 00:00:35
UNICEF is working with the Vietnamese government 00:00:39
to provide these rural communities greater access to safe water. 00:00:41
First, by building the infrastructure, 00:00:46
such as latrines and sanitation systems, 00:00:48
in kindergartens and schools. 00:00:51
Then, teaching children good hygiene, 00:00:54
so they can learn to stay healthy. 00:00:56
At An Thien Primary School, 00:00:59
students take part in regular hygiene promotion classes 00:01:01
and take turns each week cleaning the toilets and water taps. 00:01:04
This class is very useful because we know now 00:01:09
we shouldn't throw our garbage into the river, 00:01:11
and we should always wash our hands with soap 00:01:13
to keep clean and prevent disease. 00:01:15
UNICEF is also helping build water systems outside the classroom, 00:01:18
like this one in nearby Dai Phac Commune. 00:01:22
It purifies and pumps clean water directly to villagers' homes, 00:01:26
making a dramatic improvement in the lives of people like Bui Thi Binh. 00:01:30
Until recently, she had to fetch water from a well down the road. 00:01:35
Now she has more time to focus on the needs of her two children. 00:01:39
The water is cleaner than using the well. 00:01:45
Before, I had to go three or four times a day to fetch water. 00:01:48
Now it's easier because it's in my home. 00:01:51
Giving a basic but vital resource that makes lives healthier 00:01:55
and offers the disadvantaged a better chance 00:01:59
to break out of a cycle of poverty. 00:02:01
In Yen Bai Province, Vietnam, 00:02:05
this is Steve Nettleton reporting for UNICEF Television. 00:02:07
