Long ago, in the kingdom of Alba Longa, lived a king named Numitor. 00:00:00
He was a very good ruler and had a beautiful daughter named Sylvia. 00:00:05
But Numitor's wicked brother, Amulius, overthrew Numitor and took the throne for himself. 00:00:09
Amulius feared that his niece would give birth to sons who might try to retake the throne in the future, 00:00:14
so he banished Sylvia to the temple of Mars to be a Vestal Virgin. 00:00:19
But Mars, the god of war, fell in love with her, 00:00:23
and together they had twin sons who they named Romulus and Remus. 00:00:26
Once word got to Emulius, he furiously ordered the servants to sneak into Mars' temple that night and kill the two babies. 00:00:30
But when the servants arrived at the temple, they could not bring themselves to harm the twins. 00:00:36
Instead, they decided to send them away into the Tiber River so that Emulius would not know that they had lived. 00:00:40
The river's currents were surprisingly calm, and the babies did not drown. 00:00:46
In fact, the cradle they were in drifted onto a bank just at the bottom of Palantine Hill. 00:00:50
The next morning, a she-wolf walked down the hill to get a drink at the river. 00:00:56
But when she did, she stumbled upon Romulus and Remus. 00:01:01
But instead of viciously killing them and eating them like any normal savage beast would, 00:01:04
she decided to take them into her own care and watch over them as if they were her own pups. 00:01:08
When the boys were older, they were found by a shepherd named Faustulus, 00:01:14
Postulus, who took them from the she-wolf and raised them with his wife. 00:01:17
They grew up to be strong young men, and word spread to the town where the former king Numitor 00:01:21
had been banished to. 00:01:26
He realized that the boys were his grandsons, and decided to have them come to him. 00:01:28
When the twins arrived, Numitor explained to them everything that had happened, and told 00:01:33
them that they needed to overthrow Amulius and retake the throne for him. 00:01:38
That night, Romulus and Remus gathered an army of men, raided the kingdom, and killed their uncle. 00:01:42
Once Numitor was back on the throne, his grandsons decided that they wanted to build and start a city of their own. 00:01:48
But they couldn't decide where to build it. 00:01:54
Romulus wanted to build it on Palatine Hill, where the She-Wolf had nursed them. 00:01:57
Remus wanted to build it on Aventine Hill. 00:02:01
Since they could not agree, the two decided to build their own cities. 00:02:04
but while they were building Remus started mocking Romulus for having such 00:02:07
low walls and left over them to prove his point 00:02:11
Romulus grew extremely angry and killed his brother without hesitation 00:02:14
exclaiming so perish everyone that shall hereafter leap over my wall 00:02:18
