A new look for Schweinfurt
Hans Schnabel works for the City Marketing and Trade Promotion Department in Schweinfurt,
00:00:00
Germany.
00:00:24
For many years, the city was the center of Europe's ball bearing industry.
00:00:25
This is a part of the city of Schweinfurt.
00:00:30
The city has a very big crisis in the year 1992.
00:00:32
We lost 10,000 jobs in our factories, in the ball bearing factories and in other factories.
00:00:36
In the same year, the people elected a new mayor, Mrs. Grieser, and Mrs. Grieser said
00:00:42
always in every crisis, you can find also a change.
00:00:46
And so we like to use the changes in the last 15 years.
00:00:50
However, at the start of the 1990s, Europe went into a recession, which decreased production
00:00:55
in the automobile industry, badly affecting the manufacturers of ball bearings.
00:01:00
So what you can see here is the western part of the city of Schweinfurt, where the bearing
00:01:05
industry is based.
00:01:10
In Schweinfurt, where we have very much concentrated the bearing industry, we had a loss of employment
00:01:13
of about 30 to 40 percent.
00:01:22
The loss of 10,000 jobs led to a vigorous response on the part of the city.
00:01:25
The face of the city has changed in two ways.
00:01:29
What you can see by the first view, you can see a lot of new buildings like a museum,
00:01:33
like a library, like new shopping centers or like a conference center.
00:01:38
But the buildings are not the main thing.
00:01:44
The main thing are the jobs in the buildings, a lot of jobs in services.
00:01:47
In the last 15 years or so, we create 7,000 new jobs in services.
00:01:52
And one of the most important projects is the conference center.
00:01:57
The conference center was the first step to move into the service jobs.
00:02:02
We had no conference facilities like this in Schweinfurt.
00:02:09
And our companies, when they made conferences, they had to go in other cities far from here.
00:02:13
So we decided to build this conference center connected with the hotel.
00:02:18
We had a budget from 12 million Euro for this project and we get 50 percent from the EC
00:02:23
for this project.
00:02:30
And totally, we create 120 new jobs by the conference center, by the hotel and by the
00:02:31
services around this project.
00:02:37
Morgen um 15 Uhr?
00:02:39
Gerne.
00:02:41
Wiederhören.
00:02:42
So, you see in here the bookings for the following month.
00:02:45
We had approximately 12 conferences for the last three months.
00:02:49
In just three months, the new conference center had already played host to over 6,000 delegates.
00:02:54
The building was opened in the year 2002.
00:02:59
We increased the overnights in Schweinfurt per year from 100,000 overnights up to 140,000
00:03:02
overnights.
00:03:11
And this conference center was also a good opportunity to increase jobs and employments.
00:03:12
Attached to the conference center is a hotel, built with private funding and providing a
00:03:22
clear demonstration of the role model played by this center, where dozens of new jobs have
00:03:26
been created.
00:03:32
But the city's transformation doesn't stop here.
00:03:34
A new cultural center is under construction in the city center.
00:03:37
Here we are on a very special place.
00:03:43
It is the center of the city and you can see three new buildings.
00:03:45
They make a new face for the city.
00:03:49
One of the buildings is the museum, the library and behind us we have a new building for a
00:03:51
federal customer service.
00:03:55
The service industry has also made inroads into the outlying districts where a call center
00:03:58
has been built.
00:04:02
Sabine Lombardi used to work in the ball bearing industry.
00:04:03
As a result of the crisis in this sector, she lost her job in the 1990s.
00:04:06
At first I thought it would be impossible to find a new job here in Schweinfurt but
00:04:11
then I had this big chance to work here at the call center and it gave me a big responsibility
00:04:15
and a big chance to work over here now.
00:04:22
In a study by the Swiss Research Institute Prognos, Schweinfurt was named the most dynamic
00:04:25
city in Germany.
00:04:30
This level of excellence could not have been achieved without assistance from the European
00:04:31
Regional Development Fund.
00:04:34
When we look over the last 12 years, we made 8 or 10 projects with money from the EC and
00:04:36
the budget for all these projects I think was approximately 40 or 45 million Euro and
00:04:42
we get normally 50% for the projects from the EC so that we have 20, 22, 23 millions
00:04:49
from the structure fund from the European Union.
00:04:57
Schweinfurt is now one of the few European cities that can pride itself on being able
00:05:02
to offer as many jobs as it has residents, which is 55,000.
00:05:06
In less than 15 years, the city has achieved a remarkable turnaround.
