We are ecodependent and interdependent

Descargar la transcripción

Human beings are not isolated individuals. We cannot live alone. We need other people in order to become part of society. 00:00:00
In order to become really human, we need other people to coexist. So we say that human beings are interdependent. 00:00:10
We also need basic resources to survive. For example, we need clean air, fresh water, food, or energy. 00:00:18
So we also depend on the ecosystem we live in. We are ecodependent. As we are ecodependent and interdependent, 00:00:27
we must take this into account because our activity affects the planet we live in. 00:00:36
Unfortunately, in the last two centuries, human activity has changed the way planet Earth works. 00:00:43
The Industrial Revolution has changed the way we live on planet Earth. 00:00:51
We have released massive amounts of CO2 and other greenhouse effect gases to the atmosphere, 00:00:55
and this has changed the climate and this has created a global warming problem 00:01:01
that might affect biodiversity and even human survival in the future. 00:01:07
Only if we take care of our planet, human beings will be able to survive. 00:01:14
Of course, non-renewable resources such as oil or minerals cannot be extracted forever. There is a limit for them. 00:01:22
But also, renewable resources have a limit. We cannot use water or air without limit 00:01:32
because in a country populated by 8 billion people, there is a limit to the amount of fresh water or clean air that we can use. 00:01:39
So that's why we say the carrying capacity of planet Earth is being excessed. 00:01:51
The carrying capacity of an ecosystem is the amount of a certain population that can be sustained with the resources that are available. 00:01:58
In this sense, we talk about the ecological footprint. 00:02:09
The ecological footprint is a calculation of how many planets Earth would be necessary 00:02:13
if everybody lived with the same patterns, with the same type of life, with the same style that we are currently having. 00:02:20
If everybody lived like now we are living on planet Earth, we would need 1.7 planets Earth to keep on living like that. 00:02:29
Of course, as we don't have 1.7 planets Earth, we only have one, we must do something if we want to keep surviving here. 00:02:40
We must limit the amount of resources we use. We must change our way of life. 00:02:50
We must stop consumpting so many goods that we sometimes don't really need. 00:02:56
We should be careful in the way we use renewable resources. 00:03:03
And we should use moderately the non-renewable resources because there is a limit and they are getting exhausted. 00:03:07
Only like that, taking an environmental conscience and changing the way of life, can we survive on planet Earth and can we assure a future to our descendants. 00:03:14
