The basic aim of consumer protection policy in the EU is to inform and empower consumers, ensuring they are equally well-protected across the 27 EU Member States with the European Commission working in synergy with the National Authorities. EU rules curb abusive practices, harmonize legislation in the financial services and monitor product safety (via the RAPEX alert system). In addition the European Consumer Centres (ECCs) provide information and support in case of redress to EU citizens.

Today's European Union is made up of 27 countries, but it is also home to 490 million citizens, 00:00:00
all of whom are consumers. So consumer policy concerns all of you. 00:00:12
Europe has become a huge single market where Europeans can shop anywhere they like. 00:00:18
But to ensure that everyone can take full advantage of it, you as consumers must enjoy the same rights 00:00:22
and the same protection everywhere, be it your corner shop or via e-shopping. 00:00:27
And for any kind of sector, basic goods or digital products, holidays or energy, transport or banks, 00:00:32
this is a priority for us. 00:00:39
I don't want to see consumers misled anywhere in Europe. 00:00:41
They should be equally well protected because trust is the currency of a modern economy. 00:00:46
We work with national authorities to ensure that European laws are implemented on the ground 00:00:53
for the benefit of consumers and businesses alike. 00:00:58
Indeed, new EU rules crack down on misleading advertising. 00:01:01
They ban the most abusive practices such as fake free offers and protect you from aggressive selling. 00:01:05
Our action also concerns financial services. 00:01:12
We aim to harmonise the consumer credit market and open it to Europe-wide competition. 00:01:15
This will bring with it more transparency and greater choice for consumers 00:01:20
when they want to borrow money to buy a new car or a washing machine. 00:01:24
So you as consumers have rights. 00:01:28
But even so, you have to know them and to use them. 00:01:31
Making informed choices is truly essential, starting at a very early age. 00:01:34
Thanks to the Europa Diary, available in all EU languages, 00:01:38
teachers can organise consumer education classes and teach their pupils about the traps to be avoided. 00:01:41
For adult consumers, the interactive website dolcetta.eu is available in 20 languages. 00:01:48
It gives you information about your rights and consumer issues in general. 00:01:54
In every member state, you can also turn to the network of European consumer centres 00:01:59
to get free information and assistance services 00:02:03
and help to get the redress you're entitled to for problems with purchases made outside your country. 00:02:06
But European consumer protection policy also concerns consumer safety. 00:02:12
Products have to be safe, first and foremost for the most vulnerable consumers, our children. 00:02:18
The rapid alert system RAPEX helps to stop dangerous products 00:02:23
from reaching the buying public in 30 European countries. 00:02:27
We work with all players to make sure everybody plays its role in protecting European consumers. 00:02:33
European consumer policy is about turning consumers from economic passengers into economic drivers. 00:02:38
The European Commission wants to make markets work for real people. 00:02:44
Know your rights. Use your rights. 00:02:47
