Good morning everyone! Today I wanted to share a little bit about where I'm from.
00:00:00
So as you know I'm from the United States, which is a very big country, all
00:00:16
the way across the Atlantic Ocean from where we are in Spain. I am from a state
00:00:21
called Florida. So Florida is this state right here. It's similar to Spain because
00:00:27
it's a peninsula, and so is Spain. It sticks out in the ocean. And so to get here, I took a plane
00:00:39
and I flew from Florida to New York, which is a big city right here. And then I flew from New York
00:00:47
all the way to Madrid across the ocean. So I want to talk a little bit more about Florida.
00:00:55
so this is Florida it's a big state and most of it is surrounded by ocean and Florida is
00:01:02
famous in the United States because it has a lot of beaches so people travel there from
00:01:17
all over the country to go to the beach and it's also very hot all the year round
00:01:24
so there are people who live up north in the united states where it snows in the winter and
00:01:32
it's very cold and there are people who have a lot of money who buy a second house in florida
00:01:38
so that they can come during the winter and then that way they're not freezing during the winter
00:01:45
florida is also very famous for its theme parks like disney world and sea world and these are in
00:01:50
Orlando. Orlando is a very, very famous city. Yes, yes. And then another famous city in Florida
00:02:01
is called Miami. A lot of people in Miami speak Spanish. There are some people in Miami who only
00:02:12
speak Spanish. They don't speak English. So Florida has many different cultures.
00:02:19
And I was born in this city called Fort Lauderdale. I was born here, but when I was young,
00:02:25
my family moved here to, okay, my family moved here to Tallahassee and this is the capital of
00:02:33
Florida. So Tallahassee is the capital of Florida just like Madrid is the capital of Spain and this
00:02:48
is where I grew up and then here in Gainesville is where I went to college. So I went from here
00:02:55
to here to here to here, which was much farther. Yes. So this is Tallahassee. This is the city
00:03:01
where I grew up. This is the Capitol building right here. So Tallahassee has two Capitol
00:03:10
buildings. As you can see, this one is very old fashioned looking. It was built, I think,
00:03:18
the 1800s so over a hundred years ago but as florida got bigger and bigger and more people
00:03:26
moved there they needed a bigger government so they built this big capitol building right behind
00:03:34
the old one so now we have two capitol buildings and this is the flag of the united states
00:03:41
and this is the flag of florida right here this is another view of the two capitol buildings
00:03:49
from the road. So there's a big road that goes right in front of it. Okay. Tallahassee is known
00:04:01
for canopy roads. So roads that are covered with trees. So the whole city is full of trees,
00:04:11
lots and lots of trees. And especially oak trees, which look like this. And so as you're driving,
00:04:20
you are always driving through the trees and it's very very beautiful we have so many oak trees that
00:04:28
the the official seal of tallahassee is a tree yes this is a picture from tallahassee in the 1890s
00:04:37
so about 100 150 years ago and even back then there were oak trees
00:04:52
so they've been there for a very long time this is a postcard of a Tallahassee oak tree from 1940
00:04:59
long time ago Tallahassee is not on the beach as you can see in the picture it's in them it's
00:05:08
inland but we are less than an hour away from the ocean and this is one of the closest spots
00:05:18
on the coast to Tallahassee it's called st. Mark's lighthouse so this is a
00:05:27
lighthouse and you can see there are places where you can dock your boat and
00:05:33
this isn't really a good beach for swimming but a lot of people come to go
00:05:40
boating out here the lighthouse I think so another big thing in Tallahassee is
00:05:46
our university it's called Florida State University or FSU this is not where I
00:06:00
went to school I went to the University of Florida which is the rival school of
00:06:06
FSU so there's a big football game but not not football like you know American
00:06:12
football every year between FSU which is this school and UF where I went and it's
00:06:18
it's a huge game it's like Madrid versus Barcelona here it's a big deal so this
00:06:25
is a picture of the school and then this is the mascot of the school it's we call
00:06:32
them the Seminoles because back before the Americans lived in Florida it was
00:06:40
the home of the Seminole Indian tribe yes and this is FSU is very famous for
00:06:46
its football team. Here are some pictures. This is the stadium in Tallahassee. It's very big.
00:06:54
And I have a video of the opening of one of the games. So one of the famous things
00:07:04
that FSU does for football. So they have somebody dress up as the mascot. His name is Chief Osceola
00:07:12
and he has a horse named Renegade and they do something called the planting of the spear.
00:07:34
So I'll show you. Yes, in the football field. And this is the chant. Each football team has
00:07:42
its own chant and this is FSU's. So I'll skip ahead a little bit.
00:07:50
and you can see all the people are doing the football chant
00:07:55
there's the band there's the cheerleaders okay right here oh yeah all of the all of this team's
00:08:01
games yes at home when when it's a home game yeah yes so it's very famous
00:08:39
Is he a real Indian?
00:08:50
I think so, yes.
00:08:52
It's better than Alabama, I think, no?
00:08:55
Yeah.
00:08:58
It's better.
00:08:59
Yes.
00:09:00
Yeah, definitely at least.
00:09:00
It's like Real Madrid, no?
00:09:02
Very, very famous.
00:09:09
Yes.
00:09:10
Yeah, Alabama.
00:09:11
And another cool thing about Tallahassee is that we have an old Spanish mission.
00:09:13
so the the first people who came to florida were from spain so spain settled florida and then
00:09:18
after the united states became a country they bought slash fought for the land from spain
00:09:26
but before the americans were there the spanish were there and so where i live there is an old
00:09:33
Spanish mission. It's not the buildings that were there in the 1700s because they were very old and
00:09:41
they fell down but these this is meant to be what it would have looked like. So this is the church
00:09:50
so this would have been the church that the missionaries worshipped at and this here is
00:09:57
a house that the Native Americans would have had their gatherings in and it doesn't have a roof
00:10:05
but there's a big fire inside so when it rained the fire was so big that it burned up all the rain
00:10:12
mm-hmm but it's it's huge it's really big
00:10:19
and that's all I have about Tallahassee today thank you for listening
