Today we'll be talking about resistor color codes. 00:00:00
The resistor color code is a system of resistance value marking using color bands. 00:00:07
To read a resistor, orient it so that the color bands are closest to the lead on the 00:00:13
left hand side of the resistor. 00:00:19
The first three color bands show the value of the resistor, while the fourth color band 00:00:22
shows the tolerance or accuracy. 00:00:26
To read the color codes on a resistor, refer to the color code chart in your lab book. 00:00:30
Reading the color decoding chart is quite simple. 00:00:35
As you will see here, the first digit's value is determined by the first stripe of color. 00:00:38
If our first stripe is brown, that gives the first digit a value of 1. 00:00:45
If our second stripe is black, that gives it a digit value of 0. 00:00:50
The third stripe is the multiplier. 00:00:55
On our resistor, our third stripe is yellow, so we simply multiply the first two digits 00:00:58
by 10,000, making this a 100,000 ohm resistor. 00:01:03
The fourth band on this resistor is gold, giving us a tolerance of plus or minus 5%. 00:01:09
And that's how you read the color bands on your resistor. 00:01:15
