Only a few days old and as precious as life itself.
00:00:03
These babies are not only cherished by their families,
00:00:09
but recognized and protected as full members of their societies.
00:00:13
The birth registration they receive will establish who they are
00:00:21
and guarantee their fundamental rights as citizens.
00:00:26
With UNICEF's support, this hospital in Venezuela's Zulia State
00:00:32
is among the first to be equipped with a birth registration unit,
00:00:37
providing free and quick registration to all children born here.
00:00:43
As part of a nationwide strategy called Trail for Life,
00:00:50
birth registration, immunization and awareness on breastfeeding
00:00:56
are also carried out in rural areas,
00:01:02
so that children, especially the most impoverished and excluded, can all benefit.
00:01:05
During this round of Trail for Life campaign,
00:01:14
many children from the indigenous Wayu community
00:01:18
are immunized against common childhood diseases such as polio and measles.
00:01:22
Community volunteers use the opportunity to educate mothers on breastfeeding,
00:01:29
the best way to provide food to babies during the first six months of life.
00:01:34
While the birth registration rate remains low in many parts of Venezuela,
00:01:42
here in Maracaibo, capital city of Zulia State, it has reached 86%.
00:01:48
I have nine children and I registered the last three in this Trail for Life program.
00:01:57
They have really benefited from it a lot.
00:02:03
The nationwide immunization coverage has also increased for children under one,
00:02:07
another encouraging result achieved through Trail for Life.
