When the Romans conquered the Iberian Peninsula, 00:00:15
they brought their language, religion, customs, and culture. 00:00:19
Roman rule lasted 600 years, 00:00:27
and the evidence of that can be found throughout Spain. 00:00:31
The Romans were great architects and engineers, 00:00:36
and during their period of rule built many structures, 00:00:42
including bridges, aqueducts, and theatres. 00:00:46
Much of what they built is lost or in ruins. 00:00:54
But the Romans were very good builders, 00:00:59
and some of the structures they built in Spain are still standing. 00:01:02
One of the most well-known is the aqueduct in Segovia. 00:01:08
Aqueducts were built to provide towns and cities with water. 00:01:14
They carried water downhill from springs all the way to houses, baths and fountains. 00:01:19
Today, the old aqueduct of Segovia is a popular tourist attraction. 00:01:30
In Italica, near Sevilla, you can see the ruins of an amphitheatre. 00:01:37
Amphitheatres were in the open air and round or oval in shape. 00:01:46
the romans watched chariot races there and fights between gladiators and wild animals 00:01:53
if you visit merida you can see the beautiful ruins of the teatro romano 00:02:01
where people can still watch drama during the town's summer festival you can also see 00:02:09
the roman bridge one of the longest the romans ever built the romans built many bridges not only 00:02:16
in spain but across the empire they used them to connect places and to transport materials and 00:02:25
soldiers many of the original bridges such as this one in salamanca and this one in cordoba 00:02:35
have been rebuilt. 00:02:44
One day, the world of present-day Spain will be the past. 00:02:48
How will tourists of the future compare our structures to what the Romans built? 00:02:54
