Why would astronauts study sand? 00:00:10
On Earth, dry sand or soil particles are tightly packed together. 00:00:12
This creates friction that makes the sand or soil strong. 00:00:16
What about wet sand or soil? 00:00:19
If water gets between the particles, then the particles lose friction and the ground 00:00:21
can act like quicksand. 00:00:25
This is called liquefaction, which means solid sand or soil acts more like a liquid. 00:00:26
How can studying sand in space help scientists on Earth? 00:00:32
On Earth, gravity pulls the particles down too fast to watch. 00:00:36
In space, scientists can watch and study the particles slowly separating. 00:00:39
This helps our scientists understand how soil moves during an earthquake. 00:00:44
