My first diagnosis dates back to 1996, when I found a small lump in my breast. 00:00:31
In 2004, a second small lump appeared in my other breast. 00:00:39
I was shattered and felt very scared. 00:00:45
The first time I had breast cancer, I underwent a partial mastectomy, followed by radiotherapy. 00:00:51
I took medication and was on hormone therapy for five years. 00:00:59
The operation took place in Cyprus, before the cancer had been diagnosed. 00:01:08
Then I went to London for radiotherapy. 00:01:16
I was very fortunate to be able to go to London. 00:01:20
At that time, the latest radiotherapy equipment was not yet available in Cyprus. 00:01:24
When you undergo breast surgery, your whole being is affected, your femininity, your body. 00:01:37
When I had a mastectomy for the second time, I also underwent breast reconstruction, 00:01:45
which helped me to feel better psychologically. 00:01:52
I think it is very important for us to have these choices. 00:01:58
I always used to love swimming. I love swimming and I love the water. 00:02:06
It gives me a sense of freedom, particularly after the operations and therapy treatments. 00:02:11
Swimming helped me to regain my rhythm. 00:02:18
Some other women and I created Europa Donna Cyprus, 00:02:27
whose aim is not only to support women and their families, 00:02:32
but also to try to enable women in our country 00:02:35
to gain all the therapy and diagnosis they are entitled to at European level. 00:02:39
My cancer experience allowed me to change my view of life. 00:02:52
I see life as a glass half full and never half empty. 00:02:58
This has helped me to be a lot more positive and creative and to change my priorities. 00:03:02
On a human level, it has enabled me to be fairer to others. 00:03:09
I wish that no woman ever has to live through this experience alone. 00:03:21
