If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.
00:00:04
UNICEF goodwill ambassador Clay Aiken recently toured medical facilities and schools in Afghanistan
00:00:07
to learn more about how the lives of children are being improved.
00:00:13
The American pop singer spent five days traveling from the capital city of Kabul to Bamiyan
00:00:18
in the central region of the country.
00:00:22
He paid a visit to the UNICEF-supported Sadat Health Clinic.
00:00:25
Here Mr. Aiken gave a polio vaccination to a young child and met with many mothers.
00:00:29
The facility provides a much-needed lifeline for nearby communities.
00:00:33
Not only does it offer immunization services for newborn babies, but also teaches family
00:00:38
planning like best hygiene and breastfeeding practices.
00:00:42
The people of Afghanistan, at least from my impression, are without question its greatest
00:00:46
natural resource because we've been greeted with nothing but wonderful hospitality since
00:00:51
we've been here and it's been really amazing to see not only the generosity, but the strength
00:00:57
of the people who are here in Afghanistan.
00:01:02
Mr. Aiken also met with students at the Shirin Hazra School.
00:01:05
The goodwill ambassador heard from young girls and their teachers on the importance of reading
00:01:09
and writing.
00:01:12
In Bamiyan province, there are nearly 112,000 students.
00:01:14
Despite this, 30% of children in the area are out of school and enrollment of girls
00:01:18
is especially low.
00:01:22
Currently, UNICEF is trying to correct this imbalance and boost education levels in the
00:01:24
country.
00:01:28
As a former teacher, Mr. Aiken was only too happy to lend a hand during his trip.
00:01:29
It's hoped his visit will bring more attention to the needs of Afghan children.
