You've seen the word, you've seen the websites, and you may even have one. 00:00:00
But have you ever wondered, what's the big deal about blogs? 00:00:04
This is Blogs in Plain English. 00:00:08
To make sense of blogs, you have to think about the news and who makes it. 00:00:10
We'll look at news in the 20th century versus the 21st century to make our point. 00:00:14
In the 20th century, the news was produced professionally. 00:00:18
When news happened, reporters wrote the stories and a tiny group of people 00:00:21
decided what appeared in a newspaper or broadcast. 00:00:24
Professional news was mainstream, general, and limited. 00:00:27
The 21st century marked the point where news became both professional and personal. 00:00:31
A new kind of website called a weblog, or blog for short, 00:00:35
came onto the scene that let anyone be a reporter and publisher, often for free. 00:00:39
As blogs became popular, they created millions of news sources 00:00:43
that gave everyone an audience for their own version of news. 00:00:47
Of course, we're using the word news loosely. 00:00:50
But really, isn't everything news to someone? 00:00:53
In a blog, a business owner can share news about his business. 00:00:56
A mother can share news about her family. 00:00:59
Or a sports star can share news with fans. 00:01:02
These people are all bloggers. 00:01:05
How did this happen? 00:01:07
Well, blogs made sharing news on the web easy. 00:01:09
Anyone with an idea can start a new blog with the click of a button 00:01:11
and share news minutes later. 00:01:14
Here's how blogs work. 00:01:16
Blogs are websites that are organized by blog posts. 00:01:18
These are individual news stories, like articles in the paper. 00:01:21
Bloggers simply fill out a form like this one to post a new story. 00:01:24
With the click of a button, the blog post appears at the top of the web page, 00:01:27
just above yesterday's news. 00:01:31
Over time, the blog becomes a collection of these posts, 00:01:33
all archived for easy reference. 00:01:36
Also, each blog post can become a discussion through comments left by readers. 00:01:38
Blogs make the news a two-way street. 00:01:42
But really, the fuss is not about how blogs work. 00:01:45
It's about what people like you do with them that matters. 00:01:48
Let's say you have a blog about green living and outdoor photography. 00:01:51
It reflects your unique perspective. 00:01:54
This helps you build relationships with your readers 00:01:57
and other bloggers with similar interests. 00:01:59
Speaking of relationships, bloggers often work together. 00:02:02
In addition to comments, you'll read each other's posts, 00:02:05
quote each other, and link your blogs together. 00:02:08
This creates communities of bloggers that inspire and motivate each other. 00:02:11
Whether it's their ease of use or the opportunities they offer, 00:02:15
blogs have been adopted in a very big way. 00:02:19
Since 2003, there have been over 70 million blogs created, 00:02:21
each with its own version of news. 00:02:25
So the big deal about blogs is that they gave people like you the power of the media 00:02:27
and created a personal kind of news that appeals to a high number of small audiences. 00:02:32
So, it's up to you. 00:02:37
What will you do with this new power? 00:02:39
There is likely a group of people out there who want to hear what you have to say. 00:02:41
You can search for blogs using Google's Blog Search or Technorati. 00:02:45
You can also start your own blog for free at blogger or wordpress.com. 00:02:49
