You're watching UNICEF Television. 00:00:00
UNICEF representative in Democratic People's Republic of Korea, 00:00:03
Gopalan Balagopal, discusses UNICEF's work for the country's children and women. 00:00:07
We've just launched our new three-year country program, 00:00:14
which was approved by the UNICEF board in January. 00:00:18
This program seeks to build on some solid developments in the past few years. 00:00:22
The activities that we've been doing have helped improve the nutritional status of both children and women. 00:00:28
We also have a large health program. 00:00:36
We immunize all the children. 00:00:39
We have immunization rates which touch 97 percent, 00:00:42
one of the highest in the East Asia Pacific region. 00:00:46
And we provide vitamin supplements. 00:00:49
We treat children who have acute levels of malnutrition. 00:00:53
We provide clean water. 00:01:00
We provide sanitation. 00:01:03
And we have some quite exciting new developments in these areas 00:01:05
as well as in the interventions that we do for education of children. 00:01:10
For the first time last year, DPRK participated in the East Asia Learning Assessment 00:01:15
where, along with other countries in the East Asia Pacific region, 00:01:22
they picked 20 schools and did an assessment to see how teaching and learning takes place in the classrooms. 00:01:25
And these results were presented at a regional meeting in Shanghai last year 00:01:33
where it was found that for DPRK, there were two areas which were identified which required improvement. 00:01:39
One was teacher training and the second was curriculum revision. 00:01:47
And UNICEF is very much directly engaged with interventions in both these areas. 00:01:52
The situation that exists in DPRK perhaps has a few parallels anywhere. 00:01:58
And for me and the members of my team, I think the most satisfying part of being in DPRK 00:02:04
is that we realize that UNICEF's presence really makes a difference for children. 00:02:11
And everything that we do there has a direct impact on the well-being of children. 00:02:17
And there is little that gives you greater satisfaction than doing a job which you think is worthwhile. 00:02:24
