Where do human rights come from? And what is human dignity?
As you know, all human beings have rights.
00:00:01
Our human rights are included in the International Declaration that was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1948,
00:00:04
and our human rights are also included in the Spanish Constitution,
00:00:11
which explicitly says that our laws are based on the respect of these rights.
00:00:16
But where do human rights come from?
00:00:22
We don't simply have rights because they are included in these documents.
00:00:25
These rights are founded on human dignity, which is much more important than these legal documents.
00:00:29
But what is dignity?
00:00:37
We call human dignity the special value that each person has.
00:00:39
People are extremely important.
00:00:45
They have an infinite value.
00:00:47
They are different than any other thing, and they must be respected because of that.
00:00:49
The German philosopher Immanuel Kant explained what human dignity is,
00:00:55
insisting on the difference between things and people.
00:01:02
Kant said that things can be exchanged and replaced if they are broken.
00:01:07
While people are unique and irreplaceable,
00:01:13
there is nobody else in the world like you.
00:01:17
You are unique.
00:01:21
That makes you especially valuable.
00:01:22
infinitely valuable and this special value that comes from your irreplaceable character
00:01:25
is called human dignity the fact that people have dignity is also the basis of the most important
00:01:33
ethical values that we must respect as you will remember ethical value values are important things
00:01:40
that we appreciate and that are connected with our relationship with other people
00:01:48
well among these ethical values that are extremely important we should mention freedom equality
00:01:52
respect justice now why should we treat people like that why should we treat people like free
00:02:00
individuals that deserve respect and deserve no discrimination and that must be treated fairly
00:02:08
well we should do that because people have dignity this special value that is the basis
00:02:15
of our rights.
